andydickinson.net : Print organisations will need to open source their systems: New year convictions

Thanks for stopping by Jack I agree. That's why I say that it may be better for orgs to opensource some of their own tech rather then dumping the stuff they have invested in wholesale. I think there can be a middle ground. That said, getting people to share after years of owning may be tricky. But not to do it seems to fly in the face of a the received wisdom and weight of experience

Fiete Many thanks for the suggestions and the heads-up about the wikipedia entry. I've included some of the ones mentioned in the 10 years of German internet journalism http://goa2003.onlinejournalismus.de/webwatch/10j... Thanks

andydickinson.net : Newspapers belong in bins not bookshelves

I agree James. That's why I think it's a mistake to rule out print or try and replace it with e-readers. The industry just has to get its collective head round the fact that print will not die but it may not be their primary output platform

Luis I agree they will play a role but in the context of the newspaper industry it seems like the motivation for investing in them is just a way to ignore the bigger challenges (and opportunities ) of proper multi platform. In the past we have criticized papers who just shovel content on to the web. With e-readers we risk the reverse happening and that will be just as bad.

Sorry Sarah. Am still adding to the list so thanks for pointing it out and adding yourself to the list. I like the way you use youtube as an alternative to the standard JP player. A nice workaround.

andydickinson.net : Liverpool Daily uses public FOI site for scoop

I would say that it is worthy of comment because most of the media would not acknowledge the use of this kind of resource at all when, as Alison points out, there is value there for everyone. You say you've used it as a source of leads on several occasions. Did you credit the site as the source? If not then I think you're not being transparent and that isnt sustainable. Not crediting sources like this is a prime example of the 'lecture not conversation' attitude in the industry. Thats why the LDP piece is worthy of comment. Every journalist worth their salt may be checking sites like this. But it will be every journalist who understands the changes in relationships between journo and audience will be more transparent, like the LDP, who will be best set to benefit.

Strictly behind the scenes me. What's great is that this shows the value of a journalist in the process. Picking through the hundreds of requests and seeing the story not just the raw data and information. Then taking the time to make it all stack up. It's a great job.

Thans Bryan, The interface does hide things as little +'s if the window is too small - squeezing it in to my page. Great list though. Maybe it needs another timeline of election highlights. It did remind me of the Huffington/Clinton thing that I think shoul dbe included in the defining moments of blogs thing.

andydickinson.net : Why do people listen to Michael Rosenblum?

I totally agree. In a sense you could replace Michael in this argument with a number of other notable people. I think the current stuff around Jeff Jarvis would be a case in point. You're are right. That isn't Michael's fault and he is great fun to hear. He also has a boat load of sensible stuff to say. When I see the way some (not all) exectutives react at events like this - to any speaker - I just can't help but be reminded of the crowd in Monty Python's Life of Brian. :)

Hi Michael. I agree and you do a great job at that. The message isn't too shabby either but in these days of problems in the industry (as you point out in the video) perhaps people need to see beyond the style. That's a general view. Sorry, but you got used as the peg in to the point :)
