Very strange...it works flawlessly on my pclinuxos 2009.1 install on my laptop. I'd say bring this to the forums and see what they can find!

LJ, This really depends on the distribution you're using...for example, I use PCLinuxOS which DOESN'T do that with Kmix after I log in.

Yup...you're going the way of the Dodo bird if you don't post something soon. Inaction is worse than taking the wrong action. Appearance is what keeps you afloat. Right now, you appear to be dead.

Yet Another Linux Blog : Self Musings

Ever since this: http://linux-blog.org/experiment-final-head-to-he... I always recommend PCLinuxOS for new users. The control center alone is reason enough...but the distro just makes it easier for windows converts and those new to Linux to gain confidence with Linux. I recommend PCLinuxOS over all other distros. If you read the post I linked to above, you'll notice that's my wife...we had just been married when I put her through that...she didn't know much about my "linux" thing. She just needed something to get things done. So that truly is a good indicator (even if it's older) of a new user perspective. Hope this helps :)

Yet Another Linux Blog : PCLinuxOS 2009 Not Diggworthy

Good luck with arch! Lol, I don't mind using it but it sure did take a while for me to figure out my initial setup. Once I had things written down, I could get a usable system up in minutes, but that initial setup was long and tedious. With that being said, I really like distros that do a lot to setup things out of the box so that I don't spend time getting a usable system, I instead spend time on the things that matter: coding, hacking, posting, reading, etc.

Yet Another Linux Blog : An Open Letter to Foresight Linux

Not very helpful Hazel...in fact, it's almost hateful. All of these concerns listed here Theoden brought up with the 2 main developers of Foresight Linux. He realized that his voice alone was lost. He brought his voice here to give it a platform where it might be heard. One URL proves that you call people assholes without even knowing them or their situation. Which in turn, makes you a prejudicial hypocrite. So, as I said, not very helpful.

Left click on your speaker icon down in the right hand side of your kicker in KDE. Click the mixer button. Go to the "switches" tab. Click the yellow light (it may be green also) above "Analog Loopback" to turn that off. You now shouldn't have microphone going through your speakers. Let me know if this works for you!

Yet Another Linux Blog : Broken Sound in Foresight Linux 2.0.?

Thanks for the comment Billigflüge... We've found a workaround for the sound...myself and a few other individuals tracked down the culprit to be Pulseaudio, a program Foresight uses for sound. This can be worked around by uninstalling it with the following command: sudo conary erase pulseaudio:runtime After that, sound seems to work fine.

Yet Another Linux Blog : Why Business Doesn't "get" Desktop Linux

"For example the cost of a Red Hat Server License and a Microsoft Server License are not that different" Actually, they are....Red Hat Licenses are free...you pay for the support licenses/updates. That's the GPL at work for you. As for a less proven and more unstable system...I'm afraid you're completely off base there. Linux IS stable. There is a reason that science runs a Linux based grid system for important research projects (lookup Nimbus). The LHC runs Linux...all of these choose it because of the open source nature of it AND because it is stable. As for citations, I don't need them...as I said earlier, this is my personal blog...my feelings and opinions on things. But if you want to see a list of linux conversions...the only ones I know of are tracked at Lxer.com: http://lxer.com/module/db/viewby.php?uid=108&... BTW, I have heard of IRR...remember, I was a project manager (1 of 3) for a fortune 500 company...all I dealt with were desktops...software and images. When something new came down the pipeline...it was me that tested and deployed it. It was me that created the budget and timeline for it. I feel uniquely qualified among my peers in Linux to voice an opinion on subjects like this. Sorry if I didn't cover enough areas for you to have a nice tidy package you want on TCO and ROI...like I said, my own opinion and blog...not a white paper or research paper.

Yet Another Linux Blog : Is Usability Really Simplicity?

Once again, I'd have to point you toward Mandriva or PCLinuxOS. Using KDE in Ubuntu is a far cry from using it in these distros who really do KDE the way it is suppose to be done. The menu doesn't slide in PCLinuxOS 2007 for example...it's standard, just like an XP menu would be. It's simplified and organized. I've found that PCLinuxOS for me is KDE done as it should be...I barely have to change anything at all to suit me. As for style, inside Synaptic in KDE are tons of style, icons, and themes that the community has done all ready to be installed. If you have a chance, you should setup a Virtual instance and play with it a bit to see what KDE can do for you and what it is capable of. If you need help working out the style see my post here: http://linux-blog.org/install-extra-themes-and-ic... Have fun and congrats on using Linux!

Yet Another Linux Blog : Is Usability Really Simplicity?

Just compare the Gnome System Menu to the Mandriva Control Center and you'll understand what I mean. The system menu doesn't do the same thing that the control center does at all. Give it a go and it will become apparent :) The things the Mandriva Control Center can do, like YAST in OpenSuse, is what gives most of the new users I convert a warm and tingly feeling. They don't want to figure out right away how to edit a config file to get something to work. Give them small victories up front and you'll have a user for life.
