Sports Then and Now : Does the American League East Think it is 2005?

Thanks Shawn. I know most of these guys are regulars at the Hall of Very Good. I think the Yankees will definitely have to make some mid-season moves this year if they want to return to the playoffs.

Rodgers' performance will definitely need to be on the list next year. Let's see if he can post a repeat against the Bears.

Sports Then and Now : Statistics Can Be Misleading When Selecting for the Baseball Hall of Fame

AKJ, I definitely agree with you about Jack Morris. He was the best pitcher of his era and pitched at a time when ERAs were starting to rise. I also agree that Palmeiro was never considered dominant or the best at his position. However, when taken in total his numbers were very good and significantly better than many players in the HOF. So, had it not been for the drug test I have no doubt he would have gotten in. But, I do think players like Palmeiro, McGwire and Sosa and even to a lesser extent Bagwell, Gonzalez and others will change how voters look at Hall of Fame candidates. Getting into the HOF has traditionally been as much about career stats as it has been about being the best player at your position during your career. It is probably too late for players like Dale Murphy, Dave Concepcion and Tony Oliva to make the HOF, but maybe others like them will get a second look just because their career numbers aren't as overblown as more recent players.

Sports Then and Now : Oden Tale Is Familiar One For Portland Trail Blazer Fans

You are right, even with the Oden choice and injuries to others, the Trail Blazers are still relevant in the West, but they just don't have enough to contend with the Lakers. It could definitely continue to be a "wait until next year" deal for a while. Considering all the good teams they have had, hard to believe they haven't won it all since 1977.

Sports Then and Now : Jeter's Act Not an Issue of Class

Don, you are basically right, but think about this. Dustin Johnson was kept out of a playoff for a major championship because he accidentally and with no malice did something that was against the letter of the law. Derek Jeter intentionally and knowingly deceived the umpire to gain an advantage. While I guess in theory Jeter broke no rules, I bet there is a rule somewhere that players will not intentionally deceive umpires. Of course, as you pointed out, players intentionally deceive umpires all the time. Jeter just got caught in his lie.

Sports then and Now - Boston : Silence Broken: Patriots Finally Respond, Sort Of

This has all been quite entertaining to read and see my good friend Joe raked over the coals, but he has probably endured enough. Having seen the e-mail invitation Joe received, I can understand how it might be assumed that he had been pre-selected to participate. The invitation is kind of vague and really doesn't make it clear that filling out the questionnaire only makes you eligible to be selected. I am not saying that Joe hasn't over reacted, but I think the Patriots could have done a much better job of making it clear that this invitation was sent to all season ticket holders and that the "select season ticket holders who are representative of our overall fan base" are being chosen from all who express an interest to participate. Hopefully they will make the wording clearer next time out. But regardless, I'm betting that Joe won't be applying.

Sports Then and Now : Grading the LeBron James Experience

Jeff, thanks for the comment. I think it was fine for Gilbert to express his disappointment and the frustration of the fans, but I think he went a little too far. The Cavs are not going to win a title before the Heat and Gilbert has made it even tougher than before to get top players to even consider Cleveland. The Cavs are going to have to start over and build from the bottom up again. It will be a long process and maybe his rant will keep the fans engaged, but maybe not.

Sports Then and Now : Kansas City's Kauffman Stadium Chosen to Host 2012 All Star Game

I actually think Selig and crew made a good call on this one. I love Fenway Park as much as anyone, but they hosted the All-Star Game in 1999. You can't recognize every milestone and the All-Star Game is designed to give all teams a chance to host on some rotation basis. The fact that it has been nearly 40 years since they last hosted makes KC due. There is more to baseball than New York and Boston and Kansas City deserves some positive things because they along with Pittsburgh and Baltimore have been the franchises that have been most hurt by the changes in baseball's financial landscape since 1995. They did what was asked in voting to remodel and I'm glad they are being rewarded.

Sports Then and Now : Sign McNabb, Draft Tebow and Buffalo Armchair GMs' Just Shut Up!

It would be a great move for the Bills to draft Tim Tebow, but I think they would be best served to wait until the second round. He is going to be better in the NFL than most people expect. Maybe never a superstar, but I predict he will be a better NFL player than Matt Leinhart.

Sports Then and Now : Team USA Hold Your Heads High

Sports then and Now - Boston : Former Patriots RB Mosi Tatupu Dead At Age 54

This is such sad news. Mosi Tatupu was one of my favorite players from the late 1970s and early 1980s. He wasn't a superstar, but he played hard and showed a love and passion for the game. That his son would follow his footsteps to the NFL is a great tribute.

Jessica, I'm sorry if it was unclear, but my reference to 1972 being the last time without someone from North America on the podium was referring specifically to the men's side. As I mention later, the American women have had a medalist in 14 of the last 15 with 1964 being the only one without an American on the podium. Thanks for checking us out.

Sports Then and Now : Tiger Woods is Going to Talk – Do You Really Care?

Thanks Marianne. I just really struggle with this being such a big sports story. The story is if/when he returns, not that he is going to talk in public. I don't necessarily blame Tiger, I think the media can't get enough of it. The sports media should be paying attention to the Olympics, college basketball, NBA, spring training and other sports and not wasting our time obsessing on Tiger.

Sports Then and Now : Would a Salary Cap Mean Increased Parity for MLB?

Don, Nice post, but I think by using just League Championship participation to measure success, rather than total competitiveness (winning seasons, playoff appearances), you made MLB look better than they actually are. While nine of the 11 NFL teams that didn't make the conference title game did make at least one playoff appearance (multiple in most cases) only one of the nine MLB teams that didn't reach the LCS actually made a playoff appearance. In fact, most of the MLB teams that were on the list were not competitive. I understand some of that is team ineptitude, but it also stems from lack of competitive balance as teams have a much harder time competing for the long-term with the Yankees, Red Sox, etc. I am willing to bet that if you did a comparison of MLB and NFL teams and looked at how many teams in each league had 5 or more losing seasons in the decade, you would find many more in MLB than the NFL. Anyway, nice start to the conversation on this controversial issue. I look forward to your future posts on this subject.

Sports Then and Now : Ohio State Situation Is Latest NCAA Hypocrisy

Right on!!!!!!! It's obvious that the NCAA has for decades encouraged and protected those winners that keeps the cash coming while punishing the players when they try to take a cut even though its the players that actually bring in the cash. Unlike the Government that wants to redistribute all the wealth by taking from the 'haves' (who make it) and giving it to the "have-nots" (who haven't earned it) through more entilement programs.
