Balanced Melting Pot : The empanada and I

Hey, Jessica! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. I think that Jamaican cuisine is the closest to Haitian, but even they use some spices in their rice and beans that we don't. I love jerk chicken, though. We don't have anything like it so I think it eliminated the issue of "this isn't supposed to taste like this" :-) The one dish that I have yet to see duplicated is diri ak djonjon (rice and mushrooms).

Balanced Melting Pot : The audacity of elderly Venezuelans

I've only seen this amongst the elderly. I have been offered help when with the children without asking - that was also surprising. I definitely think it's cultural, but that culture had to come from somewhere. Since they have so many laws to protect them, I assume it came from the top. There are also PSA's all over the place encouraging people to make seniors (and the disabled) a priority. Did you see things like that in the UK?

You know, I've been trying to think of what would good immigration reform look like and have not had any success. I keep thinking that if countries decided to give legal status to all those already in the country, it would not do much to deter those who are trying to enter illegally. The other way to look at it is to help (I mean really help) poorer countries so that the reasons people risk their lives to leave become a non-issue. That is the least likely solution to happen though :-(

Hey, Joy! I'm glad you found me ;-) Yes, I think there is a myriad of reasons why people in the States avoid helping each other out. While there are some people out to do harm, it's sad that someone who has lived 70 years and beyond should hold so much fear when it comes to asking for help.

Balanced Melting Pot : Does offensive language get lost in translation?

Option three sounds perfect. Now the hard part is creating the "age appropriate" explanation. I was caught off guard the other day and had to explain the Holocaust to my daughter. She is still asking random questions so I know the whole concept bothers her. I find it difficult to sugar coat people being mistreated because of their ethnicity - it is what it is. I'm open to suggestions, though :-)

I will! The good thing is I'm still enjoying all my free time with the kids; especially during the summer. I was just hoping that when I was ready to jump back in, there would be somewhere to go. But, I'm trying to be proactive and start thinking now about what alternatives may interest me.

Oh boy, I do. That's what makes this topic so difficult. I don't want them to start having bad feelings about being called black when it's really not necessary. I do want them to know their history (as manu cultures as possibe), because I think that's the way to bring a greater understanding of the world.

Yes, I have thought about teaching, but it really isn't my calling. The French school recruits directly from France and the American school require some teaching experience. My field is vast enough that I thought I would be able to find SOMETHING, even if it was not exactly what I envisioned. I don't think I would need to have my diplomas validated (it's not technical enough), but I think the issue the veterinarian has is that even if she went through the process, she would not be able to easily join an existing practice. It wouldn't make sense for her to open her own shop when they will only be here for 4 years. Decisions, decisions.

Thanks for the words of encouragement! Starting my own business is of course the next logical thought in my situation. However, I've always been adverse to becoming an entrepreneur (the idea of working for myself never really appealed to me). On the other hand, I know that there are many ways to be an entrepreneur and it doesn't have to mean living, eating and breathing the business. I am slowly but surely testing those waters to see if I can still have the work/life balance that I want. Btw, are there a lot of opportunities for expats in Argentina?
