Thats right, at this moment in time nobody knows. And I'm comfortable with that, I recognise that retreating to a so therefore god must of done it would be a mistake. That kind of god of the gaps argument is a trap as the more we learn the less gaps there are, so god either dies or gets smaller and less meaningful. And lets face it a smaller less meaningful god is not what any religion teaches.

"So everyone who doesn't accept the CURRENT scientific viewpoint should be silenced ? " That's not what she is advocating, just that creationism should not be taught in science class because it is not science. It is that simple.

Teaching of religion should be limited to the type of comparative religion you describe. Unfortunately the situation is that children are being divided along the lines of the religion of their parents and indoctrinated doing school hours and at the expense of the state.

There are not enough hours in the day to teach children all that they could usefully be taught about science, this being so decisions have to be made and they should be made by experts on the subject in an open manner as is the case here. This in no way affects open mindedness as children with an interest have access to more information from varied sources.

The origin of life is a separate issue from evolution called Abiogenesis, there are some promising hypotheses such as chemical reactivity around hydrothermal vents, none have been proven although the current evidence is generally supportive. So Abiogenesis doesn't have a theory like Evolution which explains the origin, complexity and distribution of the species.

Reading the bible, studying its history and comparing what we know from other sources verses what was written in the bible is one of the leading causes of people becoming atheist.

The problem is that the supporters of creationism are trotting out the same old arguments as they have for decades, for from being excluded as they claim scientists treat their claims seriously and respond with detailed explanations of the evidence for example when the idea of irreducible complexity arose. Creationists ignore the responses and trot out the same arguments again and again as if they are dogma not science.....because they are!

There are not enough hours in the day to teach children all that they could usefully be taught about science, science classes should focus on the important areas where there is strong agreement on what is known according to scientific principles which includes Evolution and excludes Creationism. In fact there is only one area of science that currently you could include Creationism, that is teaching the difference between a hypothesis and theory in the philosophy of science. Creationism isn't even a hypothesis as it has no specific, testable prediction about what you expect to happen in a study. Where as Evolution is a theory which is a well-established principle that has been developed to explain some aspects of the natural world, it arises from repeated observation and testing and incorporates facts, laws, predictions, and tested hypotheses that are widely accepted.

"Gentleman"John24 the way in which you use THEORY is a perfect example of why people who want to teach Creationism as science cannot be trusted, due to their purposeful misrepresentation and/or failure to understand what they criticise. Theory in the context of science (as I'm sure you know given what another commentator has to say about you, but continue to purposefully misrepresent) means a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on knowledge that has been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experimentation. That you are (and here I am making a generous interpretation) apparently ignorant of even one shred of evidence reflects poorly on your criticism of the subject and a woman who has put considerable time and effort studying the topic and educating people about it freely via television, which incidentally works in a manner involving the THEORY of electromagnetics among others. Do you deny this also?

"the unenlightened life is full of suffering and dissatisfaction" a great restatement of the 1st noble truth that points to the 3rd noble truth, to many people turn away at hearing the 1st. His six building blocks of a spiritual life correspond closely to studies of what contributes to Wellness also. Although I love sitting with the local Soto Zen group I feel that the emphasis on just sitting is an over emphasis that makes me ask; Is Zen Buddhism?

Driving mindfully is an excellent practise, turn the radio off and really focus on what you are doing and the sensations of the forces at work on the car and your body as you go around corners. Take a different route to really shake up your awareness. Do you remember the intense concentration required when you were learniing to drive, how it seemed like there was so much to do at the same time. Beginners mind !

Buddhist Geeks : Discover the Emerging Face of Buddhism : Suffering: The Cliff Notes

"start to see suffering in the attachment and preference of one side or the other" If I might paraphrase this as "suffering can be seeing/being in attachment and preference to one side or the other". Until you can see things as they are without attachment and preference you cannot act fully skillfully as you might be responding to something other than what is really happening. You don't have to think happy thoughts and stay in a situation, but seeing the reality instead of your interpretation and accepting it is a prerequisite for a truely proactive/positive/skillful response.

Buddhist Geeks : Discover the Emerging Face of Buddhism : BG 163: Can Dharma Help us Turn the Corner?

Thanks for the info Vince, I am listening again to episodes 30-33 and getting a lot out of them. I have recently started sitting with a Soto Zen group as there is not a lot of choice in the area of Ireland I live and there is no mention of the fact that mediation only covers 2 parts of the eight fold path. I wonder sometimes is Zen Buddhism.

So I have a cheap casio watch programmed to 25 minute work periods with 5 minute breaks for 2 hours and it works really well. So long as I use it! After all KNOWLEDGE ISN"T POWER UNTIL IT"S APPLIED.
