Surely the problem with British politics is we need MORE Johnsons --- we've got a Brexiteer Tory, two remain Tories, and a Lib Dem but we desperately need a momentum Johnson, a Blairite Johnson and a new party Johnson to come and save us! Let us all pray that they step up now!

Give Dave a peerage, make him Sports Minister and let him spend the proceeds of online gambling promoting the health benefits of Eton Fives! Everybody happy, surely!!!

It would be quite nice to see some acknowledgement that most of this historic vandalism has actually been carried out by so-called Conservatives, including slicing off parts of my own county of Somerset!

Love the Attlee quote ..... not exactly the sentiments one would hear from anyone within a million miles of today's Labour leadership!

If you don't want politicians behaving like toddlers you shouldn't appoint an oversized toddler as Foreign Secretary!

Another interesting footnote to the Torrington by-election lies in his attempt to win back the seat in 1964. His efforts were thwarted in part by the spirited campaign of the third-placed Labour candidate, one Dr David Owen, whose efforts brought him the approving attention of Labour selectors in Plymouth, enabling his election there in 1966. Owen also felt that the Liberals had run a dirty campaign in 64, thus colouring his sceptical few of his new found allies in the early 80s with negative consequences for the Alliance.

Excellent insightful piece -- sack Grayling, give this man a peerage and make him Transport Secretary -- preferably today!

I have never supported the Conservatives and hold a senior voluntary office in another political party but I cannot find the words to express my profound admiration for Tobias Elwood's actions today -- a superlative reminder that what unites us is so much greater than what divides us in our free, democratic society.

Indeed .... and was helped by two factors. Locally the percentage threshold for a second victory in Hillhead was low due to both Con and Lab enjoying credible vote shares. And nationally the Con surge in 83 was much weaker in Scotland than in England (no surprise!) so Williams was more easily defeated by the natural winning party in Crosby. Interestingly her losing vote share in Crosby was higher than Jenkins' successful vote share in Hillhead
