As some of the founders were Deists, it's reasonable to assume that this is what connects us to the founders. You don't have to believe in God to be moral, but it helps. Otherwise, who do you answer to? Why is murder wrong if there is no frame of reference? Where do our rights as human beings come from if there is no god.
