Race Relations Project : Women

As a woman I agree with this statement. There are all different types of women and we are all amazing. This whole image thing that holly wood puts in our heads is something we need to get over. In class people had different things to say about why women have these insecurities or why they dress the way they do. Some said they dress for the guys; they put on makeup and look pretty for guys. And in a way I can understand that because no matter how nice you are or how cool you are, the first thing they are going to look at is your appearance, especially if they don’t know you. If you want boys who you don’t know to look at you, you have to look a certain way to get them to even pay attention. But I think some women take it a little too far. There is a difference between looking pretty and looking like a slut. I know way too many girls who will go out to the bars in 10 degree weather in a mini skirt and a low cut shirt with heels, there is no need for that. I go to the bars in a tank top, jeans, and flip flops and I still manage to get guys to look. And there is no need to cake the makeup on, guys are actually turned away by that because they are afraid of what you will look like in the morning, if you are just wearing a little makeup they know that you will still look the same when you wake up. Some people said that women dress the way they do because they are competing against other girls. While this is probably the most accurate reason, there is still no reason for it. Every girl is pretty in their own way and until they see that and start acting like themselves they will never be happy. This whole plastic surgery thing is a load of crap, unless you were in an accident or had cancer, you should not be getting plastic surgery, god gave you what you have for a reason; that is who you are so you should learn to live with it. Kind of opposite from the play, my roommate has a flat chest and for the first year that we were roommates she kept saying how much she wished she had boobs. Until I made her look in the mirror and walk around with me while I asked random guys what they thought about her, she would complain. After she realized that everyone that we talked to, whether we knew them or not, they all said she was pretty and it didn’t matter that she didn’t have boobs because her butt made up for it. Women need to realize that there is something special about each and everyone whether they realize it or not. They just need to take the time to figure out who they are and why they are special.

Race Relations Project : This is totally off the hook

This game is disgusting and scary for women. First of all I don’t understand the people who would rape a woman, I definitely don’t understand someone who would make a game about raping people. It almost makes it seem okay for men to rape women. This kind of game could cause more real rapes to occur because people will think it is a game and try to rape as many as they can. I kind of understand it from a porn aspect, if that is what they were going for, but there are other ways to go about making a game like that. I understand people like porn and making a game out of porn would probably be just as bad as this but I think I could understand that a little more than rape. Rape has to do with down grading the woman and hurting her. Porn at least both people are willingly doing it. I know there are games out there already where you can fondle a woman and try to arouse her, those games have nothing to do with hurting the girl. I just can’t understand how they could make games like this and women be okay with it. Sex is a natural human instinct so I understand why people would focus games on sex and images. So why don’t they focus on either the pleasure aspect for BOTH men and women or on the reality aspect on what can happen if you have sex. I think the pleasure way is definitely the way to go if you want to promote sex. Maybe have a choice of the different condoms and pleasure oils or something. But to have a game that promotes rape is just messed up. I would like to meet the person that made the game and ask them what they were thinking, if they were thinking at all or maybe which brain they were thinking with. Especially since it is made with cartoons makes me think it is somewhat geared towards middle school / high school age students rather than adults. To give kids a game like that at that age is going to put rape in their heads as okay. Or maybe make them want to try it. If they are so good at in on the game then they would be good at it in real life right? It was not long ago that I was that age and I remember how my friends acted to games where you could beat people up and smoke cigars. The whole shooting in games is a little different because it is a general mentality and known fact that if you shot someone they will most likely find you and you will go to jail for the rest of your life. But beating people up won’t put you in jail for the rest of your life. And I feel like people have that same mentality about rape. So maybe if you get caught you will have to pay a fine, maybe go to jail for a little, and have a restraining order. But you will still be able to have a life. Maybe we need to change the laws about that too.

Race Relations Project : Those Dolls Say Alot About Who We Are

Although I have seen this video and studied things like this before in other psych classes, it still pulls at my heart every time I see it. It really shows how racism is still very much a part of our society even though many of us think it has virtually disappeared. When this little girl is asked which doll is the pretty and nice doll and then which one is like her, her face is priceless and it almost hurts me because you can feel her pain in that decision. She honestly thinks she is not pretty and not as good as the white doll. There is no reason for that in today’s world but it still happens. You could conduct that study over and over again every year but until racism is completely gone everywhere, it is never going to go away. Really no matter what race you are, your children should never feel like they are bad or ugly. They should feel loved and that they are special and are just as good as everyone else. There is no reason for a little kid to think that they do not measure up to another kid because of the color of their skin. And for those of you that think it is not that big of a deal because it is only dolls, you are wrong. They hold these feelings about themselves. The same ones that you see them show about the dolls, when they look in the mirror they see that about them and it can hurt them mentally. Especially in the future when they grow up, it can hurt them when they are trying to be successful in either getting a job or continuing their education. They get a mentality that they don’t deserve to be like those successful people because of their color and then they decide not to go to college or they decide they are only allowed to go to a black college because that is where their people belong. It is the same when they go to choose their careers, many of them will not strive for the top, they will settle for any job they can get because they are just thankful someone will hire them (because of their color). This needs to stop, and though we are seeing this slowly go away, Penn State for example, it is still very much the case, especially in little towns like the one I grew up in. Minorities feel like they are not good enough to be in the smart classes even if they are smart so they hold themselves back from doing better than the white kids. It is sad that it is still like this even after all the efforts we have put forward to get rid of this. Maybe after all the old farts who are still teaching racism to their children die off we will be able to get past this.

Race Relations Project : In Her Own Words

You know in a crazy way, all of this makes sense. And even though I didn’t think anything of it before, it kind of makes me angry now that we are not allowed to talk about it, that it is considered something you must keep hidden. People tell us all the time that we should be able to talk about our feelings and our struggles to someone because it is unhealthy to keep it all in and a little bit of venting or an outside perspective is a good thing. It can be good for the mind and the body. But we can’t talk about bleeding, yet it is something I struggle with every month whether I want to or not and it can be very nerve racking to get through. There are so many things to worry about and it effects my everyday life like men could not believe. If they think giving birth is the only hard thing we go through, they better think again. In my opinion, women are much stronger than men, when it comes to pain we can go through a lot more than they can ever dream of. Number one, we have to worry about the cramps. They can make the walk to class so long and hard that we have to plan to leave early to make it there on time, also they can effect whether I do to class or not. Sometimes they are so bad that even medicine won’t help and I stay in bed curled up in a ball until it goes away slightly to the point where I can at least stand up. Number two, we have to worry about whether we are leaking or not. We wear dark colored clothes so that if we do leak a little, no one will notice. But sometimes it comes early and we aren’t ready for it, we will be in class and go to the bathroom and realize that it started and it is all over those nice white washes blue jeans so it is very noticeable and you don’t have a tampon on you. You’re worried that everyone will see and laugh or think you are disgusting because you let it leak. This hurts a mentally in a big way. Number three, it messes with our eating habits. During my period I lose about 10 pounds. Ten pounds in a week is not very healthy. On top of me losing blood, which should only weigh maybe a pound, not even, I lose my appetite for the whole week. I will maybe eat one small meal a day, maybe, sometimes I don’t eat at all because the smell of food makes me want to throw up. I drink water and Gatorade, and sometimes if I’m lucky I can get soda down. Then the next week none of my clothes fit me because I lost so much weight so quickly and I try to eat more than normal for a week so that I can fit in my clothes. Some girls have it worse than me, I know my mom would miss an entire week of school every month because her period caused her to throw up for an entire week. Us girls have it hard, but we keep on going. When men get sick or get stomach cramps the whole world comes to an end and they are bed ridden until they feel 100% again. So why is it that we can’t talk about this? It feels so much better to get it out and know that someone understands what you are going through. They only answer I can come up with is that men made the rules and they feel like they are stronger than women and they suffer more because they do harder jobs, so they can express how their bodies are feeling, but women can’t because they don’t actually suffer like they do. Maybe things are changing now, but I believe that that is how this mentality cam about a long time ago and people are just not asking enough questions because they do not like change. They say well that’s just how things are so that’s the way they are going to be. I think it would do some good if women could talk about their bleeding, men would appreciate them more and women would feel a little bit less burdened. Some day in the future, maybe we will get the that, but it won’t be any time soon.

Race Relations Project : Prom or No Prom: Just Don't Let the Queer Students Dance Together

It is sad that there is still this issue going on. I understand that people do not like change but it is about time they let people be who they want to be. We have enough rules and regulations to last us a life time, telling people who they can and cannot like is unnecessary. It is a form of racism and it needs to stop. Just because someone is different should not mean they should be banned from a high school prom. The north, for the most part (or maybe just more than the south), has been trying to overcome these issues. You would never hear of a high school canceling their prom because a gay couple wanted to come together or one girl would wear a suit. I know personally, in my school, we had a few girls come to our prom in tuxedos. You cannot discriminate against people just because they are different from you. It is kind of a law!! The south seems to still have a lot of racism and this is a perfect example but that needs to change. We came to this country to be free, be ourselves, and be free of taxes (which is a whole other huge problem I have with the world today). If people cannot be free to be who they want to be then what was the point of breaking away from Britain? The south needs to grow up and change their ways. It is sad to say but I don’t see anything changing until all the old racist people, who are still teaching their horrible ways to children and grand children, die off. That is how it is happening up north, the old people with the grudges are dying and the younger people who understand it is wrong to be racist are taking over. If you think about it, you can almost compare this to the Salem witch trials, minus the whole burning thing. But we are singling out the people who are different and treating them like they do not belong here, like they are below the human race or they are some kind of evil that we need to get rid of. It is absolutely horrible what this girl is going to have to go through now because of the schools reaction. If they would have let her go and not canceled the prom, maybe there would have been a few uncomfortable classmates, but she would not have everyone hating her. The school put the entire blame for canceling the prom on her when it was not even her decision, she actually wanted to go. Way to ruin an innocent child’s life! She is going to need a lot of counseling and support to get through this one; I hope her family at least supports her. I am almost scared that this could cause her to consider suicide and then, if people are thinking correctly, the blame would be completely on the school for how they treated her and exploited her.

Race Relations Project : Are Whites the Only People Willing to Humiliate Themselves?

First of all I think the bachelor and bachelorette are horrible shows. They give false hope to people out there trying to find love. They show that you can line people up and have relations with as many as you want at one time and still find the love of your life. That doesn’t happen in the real world. If you had that many men at one time and they all knew about it they would leave your ass. I will admit I used to watch the show, and it would make me feel all warm inside when they finally picked the winner and proposed, but from being once engaged myself, I know how love works and all of that crap on the show is complete horse crap. If people want to find love they need to get to know ONE person, they need to look at what they already have, because nine times out of ten, the person you are destined to be with, to fall madly in love with has been right by your side most of your life, you just didn’t realize it or think of them in that way. Off my rant however, I think part of the problem with the show not having a diverse selection of candidates is that many people are still uneasy about dating someone from a different race. It is sad that there is still this racial difference after how far we have come but times are changing. You see more and more frequently couples of different races. I think however that there are still a lot of people in this world that don’t agree with them, mostly older people because they grew up in a world where dating a person of a different race was wrong. I think that the TV show is trying to appeal to as many people as possible and I know a lot of older people who watch the show. Another thing might be that there has really only been white bachelors and bachelorettes on the show, and maybe they don’t want to date someone of a different race and the show wants to give all contestants a fair shot. If the bachelor or bachelorette don’t want to date someone of a different race then anyone of a different race on the show would be booted off in the first few rounds and there would really be no point in them trying. I think if there were a black bachelor or bachelorette things would be different. But then would it turn into Flavor of Love? I would hope not but I think that is why the show has not changed anything. Older people are scared of change and different races dating each other, until either they all die or we are able to change their ways of thinking (which will most likely not happen) things are not going to change. The main goal of the show is to attract viewers, as many as possible, they are not going to change if they know they are going to lose a large portion of their viewers just to be more diverse.

it might help it stick a little better in our heads. however, it still has nothing to do with me and doesn't ever effect my daily routine so I dont really feel anything. i feel bad that they have a harder time with things but everyone is dealt different cards and it is all by luck. if i feel bad for them, should the people who are born into rihc families feel bad for people like me? I put my self through college without the help of my parents and that is hard. everyone has hard times somewhere in there life and it is just like sam said in class, some people have more obstacles than others but some people find smarter and faster ways to get around them.

We are like slaves in this world and we have no time for extra worrying, i have no time to care about anything besides my school work, money, and getting a job because if i dont do all that I will be living on the streets and not able to pay my $80,000 debt from school loans. I think there are quite a lot of people in the same position where if it doesn't have something to do with thier major or their field of work or is directly related to them or their family or friends they dont have time to care. And honestly I only know a few people that actually enjoy learning about history. And even when i was taught the history the teachers were not very enthusiastic about it and only taught it to get it over with. they were much more interested in other things that didn't put such a bad light on the US. I guess maybe if we were taught at an earlier age that might help our understanding a little or help us be sypathetic. but it would really help if we could see it.

it really is sad what happened i do a agree. it is horrible what had to happen to these people but I think the reason it doesn't hit home for a lot of people is becuase they didn't actually see it. There aren't any reservations around here that I know of, i don't think there are even any in pennsylvania. So that doesn't help much for the students around here that are from PA. I think in order to get even an idea of what happened you would have to see the place. People connect with things a lot easier when they can actually see a place or be where it happened. And there isn't even one close by that you can visit. I honestly dont really get it, don't really feel responsible or understand why it is still a big deal. It does not involve me and with all the committments required of all of us now a days people don't have time to worry about things that don't effect them.

Race Relations Project : LGBT Class - Question Four

I think that after Sam’s class on Tuesday, I don’t know how there is a way people can still say that gay people cannot get married or that they cannot call it a union. Marriage is a government thing. Different religions have their different rules but when it comes down to it the government signs off on it, the government makes it law. If people think it is okay to give gay people a union with the same rights as a marriage then what is the difference? The word? It is the same damn thing as a marriage so why call it something else? We amend the constitution all the time because things are broken or wrong. This is broken and wrong and time for us to amend it. It is not right to tell someone they cannot get married just because they like someone of the same sex. Is there is nothing different between a marriage and a Union then what the hell is the big deal with the name? it is just a name. Are you going to make them call each other partners too? Because only a guy can have a wife and only a girl can have a husband? A partner is someone who works with you on a project, not someone you love. Often times gay people are more in love than straight people when they get married. And because of that they stay together longer than straight married couples do. Straight people take marriage for granted and don’t really understand that a marriage is supposed to be forever. They get divorced all the time, gay people would not do that. They go through so much just to be together that their bonds are usually stronger and they know each other better than straight people know each other. So then why, if they are better at relationships than straight people and they don’t cheat on each other and they honor the marriage, why are they not allowed to get married when straight people are and they obviously don’t honor the marriage as much. A word is a word and will never be anything more. Think about the word “love” for instance. People say it all the time and never mean it. Or you can be in a relationship and say it all the time but it doesn’t mean anything unless you show the person that you love them. The word itself means nothing anymore, people throw it around when talking to their friends or about a new song or new shoes. It is the same with the word marriage, it means nothing if you are just going to throw it away. And it means different things to different people in different religions. But there are plenty of non-religious marriages going on all the time so why can’t gays just have a non-religious marriage. The law needs to be changed and there is no reason to change the name. That just separates them further from what is considered to be “normal” people. It is like segregation! You can go to school if you are black but you have to go to a different school than the whites. Same damn thing. You can get married if your gay, but you can’t call it a marriage. It is racism! Bottom line!

Race Relations Project : Animals vs. Humans vs. Welfare Cheats

his guy has more problems than he realizes. He cannot talk to or about people like that and expect things to be okay. He cannot make a reference like that and not offend the majority of people. Most people, if not themselves, know people or are related to people on welfare. How would he feel if we referred to him as an animal for making comments like that. He has no respect for the human race. He has no respect for character, he thinks everyone should be just like him. He almost makes me think of Hitler by saying they are not good enough humans so we call them animals. They are not good enough and they should not breed, let alone live. Who in their right mind could say such a thing? He has not taken into account how those people got there or why they are there. There are so many things in this world today that put people into poverty and most of them they have no control over, it is not their fault all the time. Before you can call them animals you must know why and how they got to a point where they needed welfare. Some people I know are on welfare because they had a child with cancer and used all of their money on helping her and giving her the best care they could until she died. Now they are on welfare because they spend all their money, sold mostly all their things and went greatly into debt. The whole family, not even just the immediate family. These People are not animals. They are caring loving human beings who sacrificed a good life for someone they loved. Some people are also on welfare because that is what they were born into. Many people on welfare are children. They did not choose that life, they were born to that family by chance. It is not their fault they are on welfare and should not be treated like animals because they did nothing to deserve that, they only thing they did was to be born. There are many reasons why people go onto welfare, but it is not because they are animals. It is not like they enjoy being on welfare, they are on it because they need it to survive. It is so hard to survive in this world anymore. You make one mistake or you are dealt bad cards, you get pushed down. You cannot help it if someone in the family gets sick and needs the money more than you do (which medical expenses are way way too high in this country). I understand that there are a few people that are alcoholics and homeless that are on welfare that shouldn’t be but you also have to think, what turned them to alcohol? Why did they start drinking, what happened to them that was so bad that they needed alcohol or drugs to get rid of the pain? More often than not there is some reason and not just they are lazy animals that don’t care. This man’s comments were completely inappropriate and just makes me sick that there are people like him in the government. It is because of people like him that there ever was racism. Someone once said the same thing about blacks because they were different or lived a different life style than us. He should not be in government with views like that. He is not there for the good of the people, he is only there for the good of the people that are like him.

Race Relations Project : Avatar and the White Man's Burden

First of all, I know you are a professor and probably have a lot going on, but I think this movie is worth the almost $10. It is a great movie to break away from the everyday norms and just have fun. I don’t normally get out much either because of all the school work I have, but this movie is worth seeing in theaters in 3D. Even the glasses they give you are cool. Anyway, off my rant. I do agree with Brooks to an extent. We do seem to be in the age of the White Messiah Fable. There have been tons of movies with this same structure and avatar fits in perfectly. It seems like in a lot of movies, the heroes are always white. I know there are maybe one or two that are not but I cannot even think of them right now. And now that I think about it more, this might be a reason people are still racist. They are being taught by these movies that whites are better and will save you. They are the all-mighty powerful leaders. And this is starting at a very early age with our kids because they are also in kids movies. I think it is kind of racist but avatar does it in a different way. Usually they whites are tall handsome muscular and essentially perfect. In avatar however, the man is crippled and he is only going to this planet because his brother died and he has nothing left to live for. Being in the native body he has his legs back and he has something to live for again because he has hope and he doesn’t have to be in a wheelchair and depressed. He is already in a better state of mind before he meets the natives. And his very first encounter with them, they save him from being eaten alive. Other movies, that does not happen, the white man is always the hero. Have you ever noticed that they are also always male? Why never a female hero? I like the point he makes about the natives not being corrupted by cell phones or literacy or blockbuster movies. Maybe the reason we are not like these native is because we have all this stuff to corrupt us. Sometimes I think that our world would be better off without money and without all our extravagant things. People use to be happy. People use to actually have a life. Now all we do is work work work. We work more hours than ever before, we run ourselves into the ground to make ends meet and we have no time for our family or friends because we are worried that if we don’t work enough we will end up out in the cold on the street. Back to Brooks I agree with him about the white messiah fable. I do not however believe that it sends the message that non-whites need us to lead them. You should seriously consider making an exception for this movie, and only watch it in 3D.

Race Relations Project : Harry's Negros

I do not find anything wrong with his comment. Maybe I am not trying to read into it as far as they are but that is probably because I like to think that when people say something, they mean what they say. There is not always some hidden message or meaning behind the babble. And to me, it seems like they are looking for a reason to shun him or cause problems. Although I do not find anything wrong with his comment, he does need to learn that in his profession he is always being watched and needs to think about what he says before he says it. He should have already known this but then again he is pretty old. It is very interesting, however, that you bring up his age. Seriously, not even black people say the word Negro anymore. The last time I heard “Negro” was in the movie Hairspray and that is dated back in the 60s. That is 50 years ago! This makes it seem like he is very out dated and not keeping up with the times. So then does that mean that he is also not keeping up with the new policies and things going on in the world? Sure seems like it to me. If he is not keeping up with the times, then how can he possibly know what you want? He is supposed to be representing your voice and if he is still back in the 60’s I do not think he would be making the right decisions. So then why is he still in office? Surely if he is this out dated he would not have been voted back in, unless there is just no one running against him, or because people have not paid much attention to him. Both options are pretty bad. The one thing I can give him credit for is keeping his beliefs. With him being that old he has different beliefs than we do today. He grew up in a time period where many people were very racist and it is hard to change the beliefs that you grew up with. The younger generation grew up with the mentality that black and white is one in the same, where as he grew up with the mentality that whites are better than blacks. It is hard to change things like that and you can see it in many older people, not just him! It is kind of like, when I was growing up, Pluto was a planet. Now all of a sudden it’s not?? I will always refer to it as a planet because that is what I was taught throughout ALL of my schooling. Even though now it is not, when someone asks me to recite the planets I will always say “Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, except minus Pluto because scientists changed their minds.” He will always have the mentality of whites being better than blacks because that is how he grew up just like I will always think of Pluto as a planet, but he can try to change his wording so that it is more relevant to the present time.
