Granny may always do the Right(or perhaps Necessary, rather) Thing and keeps a close eye on herself to keep from going dark side, but she is also very proud. The very first scene we got of her in this book shows her waiting and then searching for her invitation(but trying not to appear concerned about it), not finding it, and then having to go do one of the Terrible parts of witching.

Then we see her flying through the night and pondering those Terrible Parts of the job and how hard you have to be to do them, especially the awful things like the baby, where regardless of the outcome, no one is going to be thanking her for it. She does the hard things so others don't have to, or that others won't, and the people in that position are rarely appreciated despite the necessity of them. Then she gets home to her gloomy, lonely cottage, having(as far as she knows) not even been invited to this huge event in her former pupil's life. So, she feels snubbed, she's upset because of the Ivy family's trouble and what she had to do, she's alone with her dark thoughts, and probably it has occurred to her(if only subconsciously) that there's a possible shift in the Witch roles in the area. So she was in a dark headspace, one of those moods where is just takes one more little thing to push you into tossing it all to the wind and leaving. And maybe, just maybe, the mental abilities of the Magpyrs provided that little nudge. So far as we know, Granny isn't aware of their presence and isn't on guard mentally.

Or it could be that it was after her terrible night of dark thoughts that she heard the baby's name. Sure, normally she'd know that it was meant as a tribute, but when she's already felt like they didn't want her there, then she finds out the baby was given her name, that may well have been the "they really are replacing me" moment for her.

I named a doll "Sushi" as a kid because I liked the sound. Had no idea what it meant either.

The names of the HEM wizards are not related to the Music; just a joke about the tendency of university/college student chums to give each other nicknames(often ones that are silly or nonsensical to outsiders).

They do have such a wonderful dynamic together, and I too understand Granny's attitude here. It's such an interesting thing to be close friends with someone who is at odds with you in so many ways. Sometimes frustrating, sometimes wonderfully eye-opening.

Very true. My dog doesn't slobber much, but she likes to run between people's legs, which can cause real issues considering her head is pretty much crotch height. Sometimes she forgets to duck. :/

Haha, true, 85 pounds isn't exactly small. Most of the dogs I was around growing up were probably around the 30-40 pound size, and they seemed plenty big at the time. Now they seem kind of tiny, ha!

They're fantastic dogs. It's a real shame their life span is not the longest. My girl is only 85 pounds, she's pretty delicately built for a Berner. Her dad is 140. All in all, I'm okay with her not being that big, lol!

I think they're mostly just described as black hounds, but modern portrayals tend to have them looking like stereotypically "scary" dogs such as Rotties or Dobermans, which both happen to have the black with orange eyebrows color pattern.

Yup. Though on the other hand, I have a Bernese Mountain Dog. They also have orange eyebrows but are big goofs. :D
