Poorbug- Thank you for pointing this out. Teachers are the nation's favorite whipping boy at the moment. It is simply a no-win situation when the media and schools cross paths.

Buckmeister- If teaching school is so easy, why aren't you doing it? If the adults in charge are "UNION THUGS" as you put it, why is this story about the parents and students who are fighting? Until you are willing to step up and be a positive role model or to take positive action to improve the quality of schools, then keep your mouth shut. Your comments do nothing but stir the controversy.

Ok, that is just wrong... no, I don't mean the pirating-- I mean the choice of what he pirated!! Mad Money? Beowolf? Those movies were in the $2 bin at Blockbuster before they were even a month old!! Why would you copy them and risk prosecution over those!!??!!

Buckmeister, I really hope you are just trolling-- otherwise, your ignorance is showing. Your comments about "union thugs" have nothing to do with any part of this situation. The text of the article above does not even mention teachers. Instead, it describes two specific facilities problems. The problems have reasonably straight-forward fixes: 1. establish a regular schedule of running water to ensure that each drain's trap stays effective, and 2. extend the soil vent so it is higher than the air intakes.

Darrwin- Your comments on here seem to spend a lot of time pointing fingers. Why not put together a pro-active solution to the education issues we face today. If you prefer a more conservative vantage point, that's fine-- just put weight into your words by taking action: o run for public office and help reform policies o become a volunteer at the school of your choice o get certified and become a teacher o teach your own children better values o get your neighborhood together in a show of solidarity and support of peaceful forward motion. If you are unwilling to take active steps toward what you see as a better future, then step aside. Lead, follow, or get out of the way.

Yeah, Bemis Street Boys, Latin Kings, and a whole bunch of wanna be thugs... As a teacher, I get to deal with these angels daily. One particular student (recently from East Saint Louis) thought he was being a tough and "bringin' it" on me when I stopped him in the hall for breaking some particular rule. I just laughed and asked him "where do you think this is? We're in West Michigan, where even the 'hood' isn't all that. If you want to be tough, then step up and get a diploma, a college degree, and build a better life for you and your friends/family." He had no real reply. I lived in South Central Los Angeles off and on over the course of 5 years- Hawthore, Compton, Torrance. Those were tough neighborhoods. I'm sure E. St. Louis is just as rough, and many of our Detroit suburbs would fit the same description. However, Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Holland, St. Joseph, etc. are far from that!! We need to step up as a community to *stay* above that. Send the message that gangs are not wanted and unwelcome. Even better, send the challenge that college is tougher than any gang-- see if you wanna be gangsta-types are really as tough as you claim.

Hey MI opinion- I really wish we (the US) had the cajones to apply that sort of method to solve the problems we're having. This is definitely a "fight fire with fire" situation. We are trying to respond to the threat with conventional methods, and it won't do the trick- we're not fighting a "conventional" foe. Another major issue is the way religion is being applied here. The extremists use religion as the basis for their own arguments, and by convincing their recruits of the righteousness of the cause, they are able to get innocents to do their work for them. Many of the people doing suicide bombing runs or other similar activities are coming from bleak existences with little hope for the type of fulfilling future that even the poorest americans look forward to. So, when recruited by someone who promises "revenge against the capitalistic dogs" and rewards in the afterlife, that's a pretty good option, even if it means that you need to blow yourself up in the process. While the headlines are filled with the aggressive part of the war that our troops are engaged in, they do not show all the other projects our military is involved with. They are getting water, food, and medical care to people who are living in these bombed out communities. They are helping with rebuilding both infrastructure (like roads and bridges) and communities by bringing people together. These are the sorts of things that we can do to help get more of the world on our side- to see that we're not necessarily the enemy.

WOODTV.com : Granholms final 2009 press conference | WOOD TV8

Michigan taxes need a major overhaul. We are one of a very few states with a flat income tax. Much of the current deficit is due to the way we tax-- services are not taxed, income tax is not bracketed, and we give too much leeway to the companies that come in on tax incentives. There need to be penalties for companies that leave the state after using up their tax-free years!

While I can't agree with every choice that she has made, people need to remember what a horrible mess the state finances were in when she took office. Her predecessor left a terrible situation, caused by overspending to make himself look good. That huge gap had to be filled by belt-tightening early in her tenure, and she eventually dug Michigan out of the hole. She simply cannot be blamed for the global economic situation-- Michigan just happens to have industries that get hit hard in recessions: people don't buy cars when money is tight, so GM, Ford, and Chrysler all get hit hard. Companies don't buy new interiors when money is tight, so Haworth, Herman Miller, Steelcase, Trendway, and others get hit hard. Then, as those companies downsize, people leave the state to follow the job opportunities, or they stay and spend less money. That eventually hits all the industries, even the ones Granholm has helped to bring into the state. To everyone who wants to complain: Step up! If you could do better, then _do_it_ and spare us your whining.

Hey RockfordMom- We have a 19-month-old premie, and he just got both vaccines. So far, no issues whatsoever. Of course, he did not like the shot, but as soon as the tears ended from the initial trauma, he was fine. In fact, he was walking all around the doctor's office within a minute, and had pulled off both his bandaids before we left. That was Friday morning, and he's been happy and healthy since then. Of course, we're keeping our fingers crossed, but so far so good.

I still think Wild Wild West justice has something going for it. True, there were innocent people put to death, but it made people awfully darn certain that they really meant it if they set out to do a crime. If criminals knew that they could very easily die during/after the event, or that their trial and conviction could take days instead of months, it might slow things down. Or, if they knew a conviction meant walking out of the court room and down to the executioner instead of a cushy 30 year wait in jail with TV and 3 squares daily, it might act as a deterrent.

Wow. I see you have done exhaustive research on the subject-- particularly to know that she is a "rich person" pursuing a "hobby." In this case, it would be better called a profession; not as a miller, but as a historian. And yes, she will be passing on the knowledge of the craft to future generations. Perhaps not as their calling in life, but as part of their education in history as countless school groups and tourists visit the windmill. This is not about making wheat flour; it is about preserving history and the heritage that helped found the community. Oh, and her name was June Cleaver.
