Big Hollywood : Today's Open Thread

My favorite horror movie, hands down. Still scares the hell out of me. It's powerful in a very visceral way that no movie since has captured for me. I have to watch it alone every Halloween because my wife refuses to ever watch it again!

Big Hollywood : 'Conservative Like Me': The Patrick Goldstein 'Prove Big Hollywood Wrong' Challenge

This challenge should be blast emailed to every professional in Hollywood and permalinked at the top of the site. This would even beat the "weekly date with a liberal" series. Bravo, John. Too bad the chances of it ever happening are low. Still, the point is made by the revulsion every liberal will feel at the very thought of doing anything like this.

Big Hollywood : REVIEW: 'Kick-Ass' Is Not Just For Libertarians

John, I'm glad to hear you saw value in this as well. It seems we traveled the same trajectory as far as initial disgust, giving it a chance, and falling in love with it - especially the Hit Girl character. Man, I hope there's a sequel - and I can't tell you how long it's been since I said that!

Big Hollywood : 'Kick-Ass' Is the Quintessential Libertarian Film

I was horrified when I saw the Hit-Girl trailer. I thought it was depraved. Cage was slumming. Again. The US is going to hell in a handbasket and this was the proof. But.... I went to see it anyway. Like a moth to a light bulb, I just couldn't resist. I had to see if it was really that bad. And I loved it. My wife loved it. I've seen it three times now. I'm still queasy about using an 11 year old actress for this, but I simply can't deny that I loved every minute of Kick-Ass. Leigh's characterization of this movie as having a rock solid moral center wrapped in a questionable wrapping is accurate. Both the center and the wrapping appealed to me. And yes, my favorite parts of the movie are hands down the Hit-Girl / Big Daddy scenes.

Big Government : Tea Parties, Third Parties and the Republican Party

We're basically on the same page. I'm not advocating slavish devotion to a party. I'm pointing out the practical reality that a serious third party effort is what the socialists are hoping and praying for. A divided opposition vote is the Democrats only realistic path to retain power - at least in the House. We cannot allow this to happen. Complaining on the sidelines about how the GOP stinks will only help our opponents. That is the bottom line. Given the stakes we have to work with what we have. The GOP is screwed up and many of the leaders are RINOs. We need to replace them with candidates who share Tea Party values. Like you, I have much hope that the Tea Party movement (and the obvious reality that Obama and the socialists are a clear and present danger to the country) will help us get candidates that we will be proud to vote for.

The Republican Party is the only possible choice in the upcoming election. Get involved in the party. Run for office yourself if you don't like the candidates. DON'T dilute our collective ability to throw out these idiots by voting for some stupid third party covertly funded by chortling Democrats. Not voting and voting for losers helped get us into the mess we're in now. Let's stop complaining and start making the Republican Party what it should be and needs to be in order to safeguard our country.

Breitbart.com : Court rejects Polanski move to have case dismissed

Why do they keep referring to this as a "sex case" instead of what it is - a rape case. Is Whoopi Goldberg writing for AP now or something? Just because he plea bargained down to a lesser charge doesn't change the original nature of the offense in any way.

Big Hollywood : Who You Calling Republican?

But why did TimeOut NY mention your politics at all? They don't mention the other performer's political beliefs. Clarifying your political position here is one thing, but why not ask TimeOut NY why they called out your politics in the first place when it has nothing to do with your comedy?

Big Hollywood : Movies We Like: 'Godzilla, King of the Monsters' (1956)

Godzilla, King of the Monsters is a total classic, but I disagree with your assessment of Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster. Besides the original, the Smog Monster is the only one that scared me when I was kid. I still find it creepy even now that I can see how cheesy the effects are. Yes, it's an enviro-freak's wet dream, but I still enjoy a good scare. Besides, it didn't stop me from growing up into a sensible conservative - so if it was meant to brainwash it totally failed :). I agree S.C. above as well - Destroy All Monsters was awesome!

Big Hollywood : Putting Juan Williams On the Back of the Porch

I agree with Just A Grunt. Juan's pretty liberal on most issues, but he's always been reasonable. The fact that he not only recognized that Rush was getting framed, but spoke up about it and took the (predictable) consequences like a man is a breath of fresh air. Zo really nailed the hypocrisy of the left and in particular those who employ a double standard regarding the use of racial epithets against those who disagree with them. Also, Donut is adorable. Get that evil stuffed bunny there, bud!

Big Hollywood : ABC News: 'Hollywood Tough Guy Teams With Animal Rights Groups for Tax Change'

Yes, under this scheme the non pet owners will be subsidizing pet owners. For the same government expenditure level it is a zero sum game. If one subset of taxpayers gets a deduction and consequently pays less in taxes the general rate (or rates if there are brackets) must be raised in order to raise the same amount of revenue in order to support the given level of government expenditure. So, yes, a tax deduction like this translates specifically into those who don't own pets will subsidize though who do by carrying more of the tax burden. The effect becomes systematically worse if government spending is increasing, which it most certainly is. You can also borrow the lost revenue from the tax break, but that is not practical in the long run either as we are about to find out.
