On The Downs around the Uffington White Horse, there are a lot of neolithic flint quarries. You can often find discard piles with poorer examples of flint tools, as well as other refuse such as discarded loom weights and spindle whorls - both of which are stones with holes in the middle.

This is (probably) a loom weight that my mum picked up from a chalk pit on The Downs:

This is another first post (I've been lurking for ages). I grew up a short distance from the Uffington White Horse. If you do visit, I'd also recommend walking a mile or so along the Ridgeway (one of the oldest paths in England) to Wayland's Smithy.

Among the stories told about this barrow is one that says if you need your horse shod, you should leave a coin in a hole in one of the standing stones. Next morning, your horse will have fresh shoes, and the coin will be gone. This was referred to in (I think) Lords and Ladies - only in Pratchett's version, both the coin and the horse will have vanished.
