The studies that say that have been very small studies (and therefore not terribly statistically relevant), military studies where a panel of three people made the decision that it was false, or studies where the police officers involved made personal judgements that were not procedural - and even in these cases the number of rape reports deemed false were only about 8%). The American Medical Association considers rape to be The Most Under Reported violent crime (somewhere between 75%-95% of rapes are never reported).

I do wish that the media wouldn't splash the alleged perpetrator's face all over the place, because it does ruin lives if they are not guilty, but I also wish that so many people wouldn't assume that every female who files a sexual assault charge is lying, or that most of sexual assault charges are made up. There is also the assumption that "unfounded," which is the term the FBI uses for the 8% statistic, is the same as "false allegation" which it is not. In some cases "Unfounded" can simply mean that the attacker didn't use a weapon, or that there wasn't enough physical evidence. It is confusing jargon that makes an already heated issue appear in an even worse light.
