While we're at it, we should reclaim our national railway service. And send those foreign mine and forestry companies packing. And cut the deals with GATT, NAFTA and those other global trade treaties that compromise our country's sovereignty. Wait a minute...we are still a sovereign nation, aren't we?

How about convincing Ted Rogers to sell us back the SkyDome?

James, you are of course absolutely right...but my worry is that this commentary is more wishful thinking than anything else. Nationalize our oil industry? Jack Layton our very own Hugo Chavez? That's just going way too far with capital-S Socialism for good and fair-minded Canadians to stomach. Never mind that our great prize, National Healthcare--the one feature that resoundingly sets us apart from our American neighbours (that and we're funnier)--was envisioned and initiated by an outspoken socialist who helped to lay the groundwork for a viable NDP. Never mind that our current neo-liberal capitalist economy still relies heavily on our federal government excising our tax dollars to save drowning corporations. That's not socialism, that's called a bail-out.
But while we're dreaming, why not reclaim our national railroad while we're at it? And all those foreigners who are extracting from our mines and clearcutting our trees? Send 'em packing. While we're at it, we can drop out of GATT, NAFTA, and the rest of those treaties and agreements that compromise our sovereignty. Because, after all, we are still a sovereign nation...aren't we?

Perhaps we could even buy back the SkyDome from Ted Rogers?
