This is a stunning turn of events. Troop positions are being nearly over-run in Afghanistan because there aren't enough combat soldiers in country, and this president says he'll make a decision on troop strength in "the coming weeks?" His argument that the military front is just one aspect of the overall effort in Afghanistan is a slap in the face to solider fighting and dieing in that country right now. Of course there are other areas of concern, and folks in uniform are heavily involved in those aspects of the campaign as well. In fact, they are carrying the lion's share of the burden. But to make this statement while delaying deployment of reinforcements is strategic foolishness born of beggarly pride.
