In fact the U.S. Navy, specifically represented by Dr. James H. Irvine, a mechanical engineer in the Naval Air Warfare Center, Weapons Division, conducted research into Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome, now called Irlen Syndrome. A pilot project reported in 2003 along with a research paper presented to an Irlen International Conference demonstrated in mathematical terms that the syndrome is real and the Irlen Method is an effective treatment.
