Womanist Musings : Transgender Mayor Eric Brewer Outed

I can't agree with this at all. You can't consent to have private photographs leaked (that is, circulated without consent) and I'm not comfortable with the concept that some types of bodies are public property. I can agree that if Angelina Jolie is walking down the street (public property), she should probably expect that a paparazzo is going to take a picture of her, but that is very different than expecting that someone will take pictures of her in her bedroom (private property). When we start thinking of some bodies as the public's, where can we draw the line? It also sounds suspiciously like victim-blaming to say that if a person knows that there are "incriminating" pictures of hir floating around, ze should make different life choices in order to avoid those pictures, rather than saying that we as a society should not tolerate the dissemination of private images as public property.

I'm not comfortable with you posting those photos. As you acknowledge in this piece, Brewer doesn't want them out there because they are personal and open him up to violence. Would you post leaked photos of a cis woman in lingerie? It's sensationalistic and a clear double-standard (it's wrong for the news to do it, but okay for you?) for you to publish them here.

It's much prettier than I expected from the title. I was imagining this: <img src="http://media.npr.org/movies/images/puffy200.jpg%20alt=%22Jerry%20Seinfield%20in%20a%20frilly%20shirt%20from%20the%20puffy%20shirt%20episode%20of%20Seinfeld%22"> http://media.npr.org/movies/images/puffy200.jpg I recently sported a flannel shirt with plaid pants. I walked out to greet my friend and his jaw dropped.

Womanist Musings : Sunday Shame: Condiment Edition

My dad's partner always marks the date ketchup is opened on the package. They (mostly my little sister) can go through a sixteen fluid ounces of ketchup in about two weeks. Horrifiying.

Womanist Musings : Sunday Shame: What’s Growing In Your Fridge?

Just today I was throwing a fit that my dad has several bottles of balsamic, red wine, rice white, raspberry, and black raspberry vinegar but not ONE of white vinegar. A few weeks ago I was baking a cake and there was plenty of peanut, extra virgin, and avocado oil, but no canola. I usually love my dad's eclectic mix of foody ingredients but occasionally, I question it...

Womanist Musings : Soup Kitchens and Life Lessons

Keep in mind that while he might technically be taking a serving of food from the kitchen, what his friends get from being able to share with their friend is likely to be positive, even powerful, for them. It's so "normal" to have a friend over for milk an cookies or for dinner and his friends may not be able to share that with others. I think as long as you send him with money and he understands what a soup kitchen is and is on good behavior, it can be very positive for both hm and his friends.

Womanist Musings : Owning Heterosexual Privilege: What If Gay Were Considered The Norm?

The library bit literally brought tears to my eyes. I'm not wild about "the other sex," but everything else is so affecting and true. In my high school GSA, we did a presentation to the school wherein we did a skit that explored this idea. We got a lot of positive feedback on it, even though we played it humorously, because most people had simply never been asked to think of gay people as just as "real" and valid and important as they are. They has never really been asked to feel what it is like to be told who you are and whom you love is wrong. Thanks so much for sharing this video.

Womanist Musings : Nappy Hair In the Jolie-Pitt World

Yup. It's pretty striking how invisible the white, blonde daughter's dishevelment is. And Angelina's got some fly-aways going there, too-- and if anyone would be expected to be locked into a ridiculous beauty regimen, you'd expect it would be the grown-up actress. You could put this picture in a textbook to explain the bizarre standards to which Black hair is held.

Womanist Musings : Kid Rock: Twitter is Gay

Alright moving to the serious part of this post. Insulting Kid Rock is far too easy. What attracted me to this little blurb were not his thoughts on twitter but the fact that he was so quick to use gay as a negative descriptor. Have you seen the think before you speak PSAs? There are a bunch of them available on YouTube. Here are two of my favorites: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEpBYKOs3ys (Summary: Two cashiers, whose name tags read Emma and Julia, complain that it is so gay that Emma's parents say she has to go right home after work. The customer comes up and agrees "that's so Emma and Julia." They are confused and explains that that's what you say when you don't like something aid everyone says it. The voice over comes on to say "when you say 'that's so gay, do you realize what you say? Knock it off.") http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWS0GVOQPs0 (Summary: Three teenage boys point out a statue and laugh saying that it is gay. Wanda Sykes comes over and says "please don't say that. Don't say that something is something is gay when you mean that something is dumb or stupid. It's like if I thought this pepper shaker was dumb and I said 'man, this pepper shaker is so sixteen-year-old boy with a cheesey moustache. Just saying." She walks away and her voice over says The voice over comes on to say "when you say 'that's so gay, do you realize what you say? Knock it off.") While the alternate descriptors "stupid" and "dumb" are problematic and ableist, I think it's valuable that these commercials turn "that's so ____" around on people. It's hard to pretend that "that's so gay" is offensive when it was just turned around on you like that.

TransGriot : Dear Haters II

I agree, obviously, with your point, and I sympathize with and support you. All the same, I want to point out this comment: >>I'll skip to the heart of it since you and your ilk seem to have the brain and penis size of an atom is fairly problematic. I have a tiny penis. It has nothing to do with my intelligence, just my chromosomes and the amount of testosterone I had access to in the womb. I don't think this is a fair attack.
