That's super nice, thank you! I'm actually a brand new writer in my first month of a writing fellowship, and this is the first thing I've written that provoked this much outrage. I knew that being a woman writing on the internet would lead to some harassment, but I naively did not think that stating historical facts about someone who's been dead for hundreds of years would lead to quite so much anger. Live and learn!

So many people are so Wrong: "Hemings would have been a fool not to choose Jefferson." (That's nice, but she wasn't given the option to choose? Because she was a child that he literally owned? That's how that works?) "you r dead wrong, the people who did the DNA study retracted. TJ didn't father the children.Your facile article is despicabl" (Speaks for itself, I think.) "Very reductionist view of Jefferson and Hemings. You might want to admit you're not a U.S. historian." (I am not, in fact!) I also blocked a few people who were getting creepy so I can't see the tweets anymore, but it was something along the lines of, "You look pretty good for someone who was around in the 18th century to see Jefferson rape Hemmings." And I also got a bunch of men trying to contact me on Facebook messenger, offering to show me the error of my ways and teach me history.

The Toast linked to something I wrote I can die happy! Anyway, I wrote that Vox piece on the Jefferson book, and if anyone wants to see the creepiest tweets I've gotten about it I am ready and willing to share.

Huh. I'm kind of at a loss for anything to say except, "No, that is factually inaccurate"? Because every single named character except for George III is played by a person of color. There are some white actors in the chorus, but that's really it.

Yes, I had the same reaction. The problem with what Alan is doing is that he's being rude and threatening; it would be just as rude and threatening if someone the writer knew emailed him out of the blue to say "read this incoherent thing I wrote about Shakespeare and anoint me the next big thing, or else." It's fine to say, "No, stop being weird and sending me vague threats, I am a busy person with a life and professional responsibilities that do not revolve around you." But saying, "No, because my friends are better than you" feels like it's . . . missing the point? Like he's congratulating himself on the insularity of his friend group instead of addressing the entitlement of this random?

Seconding this! And if you're on twitter, follow @bookjobs, which syndicates all the job listings on Publisher's Marketplace. Publishing's a rough gig, but it's not impossible. And if you're into editing, think about whether or not agenting might be the job for you: agents do a lot of editing, and since there are tons of literary agencies of varying sizes around the country, in my experience it's easier to get an internship at an agency than it is at a press. (Although, again, don't count on getting paid for it.)

The Toast : Please Be So Good As To Remember W. Somerset Maugham Once Had A Sex Dream About Shelley

I know it's a cliche but I'd totally go there with Shakespeare, even if it was just for the story. Plus Venus and Adonis is hot.

The Toast : "Where Is The Diversity In Publishing?"

Anecdotally, that lines up with my experience in trade and academic publishing, both at independent houses and at the Big 5. Entry-level publishing is almost entirely women (at my publishing course I once spotted five men standing in a protective knot in the corner, murmuring, "I mean I guess I was a little outnumbered in English classes but this . . ."), but once you reach the executive level the ladies start to disappear. At one press where I worked there was only one women in management (head of marketing because where else would you put a lady?). When I suggested to the editor-in-chief that this was not an ideal arrangement he was deeply confused. "Oh," he said. "I guess it just happened to work out that way."

For great critical food writing, the classics are MFK Fisher and Laurie Colwin. MFK Fisher is Of Her Time and can be kind of a snob, but she's also really smart and funny and her food descriptions are incredibly evocative. Laurie Colwin has a more casual, comfortable voice--reading her is like talking to your cool friend who knows everything there is to know about how to fry chicken. I also like Judith Jones a lot. She was never a food critic but she edited Julia Childs, and she has some amazing Julia stories.

The Toast : Do Not Say "Supertaster" To Me

The worst person I've ever met was a man in his thirties who refused to eat vegetables. (He warded off scurvy with orange juice.) People threw around all kinds of "Oh, maybe he's a supertaster!!!" excuses, but in retrospect it was the first sign that he was an overgrown child.

The Toast : "The Real Mr. Darcy": A Literary Pilgrimage to the Jane Austen Centre

The one thing that makes that Jane Austen tour semi-worthwhile is that they point out the building where the letter scene in Persuasion took place. It is now a coffee shop and not very atmospheric looking, but you can still go in and pretend to be Anne Elliot if that's your thing.

The Toast : Characters I Have Inappropriately Identified With When I Knew I Was Not Supposed To

I blame Robert Carlyle for my terrible decision to continue watching Once Upon a Time past the first season. But I can't say I didn't get anything out of it--crying in baffled delight "I swear I didn't care about Rumplestiltskin's love life yesterday!" during Skin Deep is one of my fondest TV memories.

The Toast : In Which Three Adults Discuss The Once and Future King Seriously and At Length

I read this for the first time recently and it completely knocked me over. I tried to read The Sword and the Stone as a kid and got bogged down in all the political philosophy, and I still found that section pretty tedious this time around (this seems like a mildly unpopular opinion? IDK). But then noble self-loathing Lancelot shows up, and I was enthralled. I remember being especially shocked by the aftermath of Lancelot's first night with Elaine--I don't think T.H. White would have had the mental framework to think of that encounter as a sexual assault, but Lancelot's reaction reads that way to me. ("You've taken it away, my being the best knight," oh god.) Reading this also made me understand the impulse that created The Mists of Avalon a lot more clearly. White has so much empathy for all of his characters except for the witches that their flatness is especially glaring, and I came away from it really craving a version of the Arthurian myth cycle that would focus on the women's point of view. But not enough to ever put myself through The Mists of Avalon again, because fuck that noise.
