While Governors everywhere are having to cut education budgets, the current admin is gearing up to use this as a means to further their agenda: http://t.co/uv3eLVv Duncan is threatening to use his power to alter No Child Left Behind w/out Congressional approval!!
MY SUGGESTION would be that parents demand their school boards FOCUS ON CONTENT. Over the last 20 years, the length of my career, I have witnessed a gradual degradation of REAL, AUTHENTIC CONTENT. I have compiled information on the Common Core Standards Initiative here: http://concernedabouteducation.posterous.com/educ... and THE PIONEER INSTITUTE'S WHITE PAPER No. 61 - The Emperor’s New Clothes: National Assessments Based on Weak “College and Career Readiness Standards” http://www.pioneerinstitute.org/pdf/100520_empero... IS VERY INFORMATIVE

I disagree. I don't discuss politics in the classroom - but I'm also glad that i'm a math teacher. I think that every teacher, no matter the subject, should present unbiased facts, and not their personal opinions. This has not been the case in my child's classrooms, and its definitely a misuse of power imho. I also feel very much responsible to produce results and help my students prepare for the future. If there was a person out there that could do my job better, then the district should definitely hire them - the students deserve the best teacher that's available!

Whereas, in 1965, the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act launched a comprehensive set of programs, including the Title I program of federal aid and in that same year, the Higher Education Act authorized assistance for postsecondary education, including financial aid programs for college tuition; and Whereas, in 1980, the United States Congress established the United States Department of Education as a Cabinet-level agency; and Whereas, nowhere in the United States Constitution is the United States Congress granted authority to oversee education, and the United States Department of Education is continuing to take upon itself an ever increasing role of encroaching on the jurisdiction that belongs to the states; and

A bill that was introduced in MO desribes just this problem with DoE - every state should draft legislation like this and take action on it! (MO hasn't done anything with it and our state BoE adopted Common Core last Tuesday!) http://www.house.mo.gov/content.aspx?info=/bills1... Whereas, the United States Department of Education states that "Education is primarily a state and local responsibility in the United States. It is states and communities, as well as public and private organizations of all kinds, that establish schools and colleges, develop curricula, and determine requirements for enrollment and graduation. The structure of education finance in America reflects this predominant state and local role." (www.2.ed.gov/about/overview/fed/role.html); and

You're exactly right about getting the administration back to the local level, but unfortunately just the opposite is happening and few people seem to be aware. Information is posted at: http://concernedabouteducation.posterous.com/cont... If you haven't heard about the Common Core Standards Initiative or Race to the Top, please look into them. With these initiatives, ill effects will outlast the current administration.

BigGovernment.com needs to expose what is currently going on with Common Core Standards and the Race to the Top "competition" States applying for RttT must agree to adopt and use CC Standards. There is little public discussion of this federal takeover.
Glenn Beck - The 912 Project : Vent through 7/9

I've read through all the messages on this thread and this one seems to me to "hit the nail on the head" We can't put our faith in any one man, or woman for that matter. It's healthy to question everyone's motives I think, but at the end of the day, we must UNITE in the common 912 message. This is why term-limits are so important. Even the most honorable person will be tempted by a long-term position of power. (We are all human.) The Founders took great care to guard our continent against this threat. That's why it's so disheartening to see Americans idolize President Obama. It may be natural to look to our "leaders" for inspiration, but we must be ever mindful of discerning truth for ourselves through prayer.
