why can't kirkwood offer 4 year bachelor's degrees? in this era on economic doom and gloom, why can't they compete with the U of I and offer a 4 year degree for LESS, keeping money in the poor student's pockets?

GazetteOnline.com : Tell Grassley you want a public health option

to the 'supposed' nurse. answer this: how can we pay for this?? obama lied his rear off last night. "if you want to keep your current plan, you can - no one will force you to change". really? how many people pay for 100% of their insurance premium? very few. very few. sure, you can keep your current plan, if you are willing to pay 100% of it. if your employer (like wal mart) decides to maximize their profits and cut or eliminate their contribution, what 'choice' will you have? if a company can drop their contribution for a public plan - they'll do it, and don't count on them giving you a bump in pay to help you cover your premium! the government has a clear track record. they can't manage this monster. no way. now if there is serious tort reform, elimination of 'exclusive' insurance borders so there is competition (say Iowa BCBS offers coverage for floirdians, etc), THEN maybe costs will go down. just like 'taxpayers for clunkers' this is another boondoggle.

GazetteOnline.com : Physical evidence of 9/11 stands on its merit

to even think for a moment that 'W' was able to organize a team to wire two buildings to implode (a process that even demolition experts have said would take MONTHS) in a city of over 9 million people and NO ONE saw a thing - AND arrange for 4 planes to be hijacked...doesn't that sound a little far-fetched?

GazetteOnline.com : Group wants a zoo in Cedar Rapids

another white elephant! what a stupid idea. isn't ce-duh rapids the SAME city that didn't have a lousy 70 grand to rebuild the monkey house all those years ago which forced all the monkeys to be transferred to other (real) zoos? but this same city DID find $250 grand to help retire the debt of the historical society? didn't those events occur around the same time? this is the same city that found 2 MILLION to buy a former packing plant in a flood plane? you are dreaming if you think this city can support a zoo! puh-lease!

gonna be a long year for hawk fans. when you SHOULD have gotten beat by a Division 3 school - a team you should have crushed - that doesn't serve as a good omen for the rest of the season! ISU may very well pound you - and ISU doesn't pound ANYONE! A round of beers if you want to lay odds that Iowa will not renewe their gig with UNI?

GazetteOnline.com : Linn supervisors hire firm to study keeping county offices at Westdale

i totally agree. what perfect timing indeed. now they can (finally) say, "We are listening to you, the voters. We want to make sure it is feasible for us to do so". They aren't kidding anyone. This should have been a NO-BRAINER from DAY ONE. We all know the only place they ever wanted to go was back downtown just to wait for the next flood. i only have 2 questions: (1) WHY do this NOW? I mean it has only been over a YEAR now. (2) Was it really necessary to waste more taxpayer money hiring an outside firm to come up with the only logical and obvious solution??

GazetteOnline.com : Raising chickens entertaining, useful

i live in Hawaii (formerly Iowa) about 20 miles out of Honolulu. In this area, the chickens 'run wild', but many people have them in their yards. Who can blame them? a dozen large farm fresh eggs here will set you back over$3.50. but as far as allowing them within city limits - i can't tell you how much JOY i get out of those roosters crowing at all hours, all day long. yep. good plan

just what Iowa needs - a return to a governor that made most of his decisions by wetting his finger and sticking it in the air to see which way the wind was blowing. hardly what iowa needs! 'terry' is the brilliant governor that felt there should be a death penalty if you kill a cop (i guess if it was your non-cop son or daughter that was killed, that made it less of a crime) and came up with privatizing the upkeep of Iowa rest areas by an out-of-state company, but added :"no one lost their jobs". didn't take much of a orcket scientist there to see how that saved taxpayers nothing.

a game at wrigley field?
typical 'head-in-the-sand' mentality. "Maybe if we don't advertise the beer or talk about the beer, the students will drink less of it". i agree with earlier posts. no way to keep them from drinking it, but now, the lose a half mil in revenue. you KNOW they are going to want to make that up...and you know who they will turn to...yep. the students via tuition increases and other fees. now not only can't the students drink (legally) they get to pay for it too! bravo UW!
