Clever Manka : Friday open thread

Happy first week of website, CleverManka! I am having a sad day because my kitty is in the ICU and I am worried about her and also about my bank account. She's pretty much guaranteed to be there at least overnight and WOW it's so expensive. At least I had already planned to work from home, so I don't have to associate with people.

I opened Photobooth to comply with your request and my cat instantly jumped in my lap, so here's me and Mina saying goodbye: <img src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/8/7488/28021141885_6657cfc8f1_z.jpg" width="640" height="427" alt="Photo on 7-1-16 at 1.21 PM"> Gonna miss you and your gifs, Manka. SO GLAD I got to know you.

I've never been good at letting go of things and people that I love. I heard this incredibly irritating aphorism when I was a teenager: "don't be sorry it's over, be happy that it happened." Mostly, I say fuck that, I'll be sad if I want to! But then my adult self intervenes and reminds me that I am happy this place existed, and happy to have met all of you, and happy that we will take The Toast out into the world with us. "Mind how ye go, hag o'hags. Ye'll be sore missed." - Kelda Jeannie, The Shepherd's Crown, Terry Pratchett.

Me that was me I made that cocktail! Sorry, I just really enjoy that someone out there in the internet associates something I did with The Toast open thread. I'm actually kind of thrilled.

Meeting you and ocwut is a not-insignificant part of what The Toast brought to my life. I hope we can make the most of it even post-Toast. (And to be totally off-topic, I just found the disc that belongs in the DA: Inquisition case I loaned you, so...I don't know what's in there, but sorry about that!)

I lost my favorite job ever and survived the following four months of unemployment mostly by getting up in time for the link roundup every day and refreshing the site as I worked on job applications. It was WORLDS better than the last time I was unemployed, when I got into a spiral of boredom, self-doubt, and loneliness. How could I be lonely with all of you to talk to? And even though I have another job now, I still refresh the site throughout the day, and I'll miss having all of you to talk to.

LOVE Wynonna Earp. It is completely ridiculous and often makes no sense, but it's so fun and gay and easy. I really hope it gets renewed, because 13 episodes is not enough.

Those IKEA chairs just do that sometimes. I know exactly the ones you mean - I used to manage a touring circus production that mainly used those chairs for audience members, and every few shows one would just break. They even sometimes broke when the cast members sat in them!

Oh yes I actually was the lawyer who signed on something having to do with the renewal of my boss's US visa a couple of years ago, which was apparently fine despite the fact that I don't practice law. All they cared about was that I'm licensed!

Oh shit, the last real Open Thread. I am getting new foster kittens TOMORROW and I will somehow shower you all with photos in a link roundup or something. Also, does anyone have recommendations for places to go/things to eat in Tokyo, Singapore, and Hong Kong? I'll be there at the end of August, with about 4 days in each city. My parents will be with me. (Ugh I don't WANT to say goodbye! But I guess everyone else is, so...goodbye, Toast, and thanks for everything.)

I'm visiting my parents over the 4th of July weekend, going to GenCon in early August, and going to ASIA at the end of August (holy crap I should ask for Toast recs for that trip). Otherwise, I'm just trying to figure out my new job while also spending as much time on Governors Island as possible. Oh, and watching a ton of soccer.

I like Kamila Shamsie a lot. She's Pakistani, now living in London I believe. The first book of hers I read was Broken Verses, which I loved in college, and then just recently I read and really enjoyed A God in Every Stone. They're very different books thematically, but I really like her writing style and sense of place. Wish I could remember more from my Persian Lit class! I'm old.
