Mono sound predates stereo, and it's a single-channel mix where you'll hear the same thing through each speaker (vs. stereo, where different parts of the song are mixed to be played through different speakers). The Beatles and George Martin supposedly spent more time working on the mono mixes on their earlier records, so to purists, those are more desirable. So the mono box set features most of the albums (not the last few) mixed differently than the stereo CDs that came out in 1987.
