It means "regular Army" as opposed to SF...some in the USASOC sniper community say Benning wants their snipers to win so they shoved their weapons down the competition's throats...

Kit Up! DEV : Navy Riverine Units Make Kit Compromises

Agree 100 percent SFMedic...but a couple quick things... These guys do do infil/exfil. They have an on the ground element call the RST and -- though we missed it during our trip with them -- they practice hot extracts with live ammo day and night of the RST at Knox. Also, in discussing with the instructor (who are all SWCC vets) and the riverines themselves, the main differences between the SWCC and RIVGRU is that the SWCCs work almost exclusively at night and they also tend to work/train less in the river/brown environment and more in the near shore/green waters... Just what I heard/saw when I was there...

Kit Up! DEV : Navy Riverine Units Make Kit Compromises

Chris, I meant to address this in the post, but I simply forgot. Deal is most wear closed cell foam blocks under their plates. It's not nearly enough to totally float them, but it's enough to give them time to pull the quick release on the armor or keep their noses above water til their wingman comes and plucks 'em out. A couple wear the old school yoke inflatables over their armor...but those are mostly the more senior guys who have kids to send to college...;-) Since I was wearing a plate carrier, took at gigantic coast guard life jacket and pulled the flotation out of it and slid the foam blocks between my chest/back and underside of the plate carrier... Hope this helps...

Kit Up! DEV : Coast Guard Suspends SEAL Program

Hey folks... One thing that I left out of the post above is the timeline for a coastie who becomes a SEAL. The way the program is set up, the coastie will serve in the Navy as a SEAL for seven years...then have the option of returning to the USCG or staying in the USN. I THINK that if he opts for the latter, he has to become a sailor and won't be on the USCG's dime any longer. The INTENT was for him to do the former and bring some of that NSW experience back into the Deployable Operations Group units. Be sure to read the entire story at Military.com and also be sure to look at the link in the post above that refers back to the story I wrote about this in 2009 -- it provides a lot of logistical background... Thanks for the discussion, though, guys -- it's interesting to see the pros on cons here, whereas the commenters on Milcom are by far and away in favor of disbanding it...
