Big Government : Why Your Child's Teacher Stinks, and What You Can Do About It

I really don't understand your comment to Red. Feeling her children are brilliant doesn't exclude her from thinking all children are special. I can't speak for her, but I certainly know all children are special. But there's a vast difference between "special" and "entitled." Every child needs attention and security and so much more. The parents are the best able to provide their needs, because they are best able to see their child as brilliant and special. Children need this. Parents, who are not messed up, do anything, including die, to give it. When you start putting children into this huge mass of humanity and making government responsible for forcing everyone to meet every child's needs, you get public school. You get WIC. These do not turn out the best results. I'm not saying, "Don't meet their needs," but when you raise a generation to feel entitled, you wind up with way too many people needing help to give it adequately or succesfully.

Red, Thanks for letting me know why I lost my one thumbs up, Red! I felt bad until I read that - lol! Children with parents like you, do great. There's such a distance between those such as yours and so much of the rest of our country's children. It's so sad.

I live in Tennessee where my daughter is a tremendous first grade teacher and a conservative (as am I). Conservatives tend to blame teachers because they're not "successful." Teachers like my daughter know that being "successful" is almost impossible today. Here’s why: 1) The dissolution of the American family. Very few children have intact families. Children have no secure base from which to begin learning. They are full of anxiety and live with neglect. 2) Those families that are intact usually have two working parents. IMO, most mothers have to work today, to pay the extravagant taxes so that single women who choose to, can stay home and be fed by the federal government. Again: anxiety and neglect. 3) The dissolution of Judeo/Christian morality. Sexual abuse is shockingly high. Parents are addicted to drugs, alcohol, sex, romance, etc., etc. 4) Big government - teachers have to spend hours every week creating paperwork to jump through hoops imposed by politicians who want to look like they're addressing the education problem.

Nancy Pelosi is filthy rich. Maybe we could take what she has and pay for part of the danged program. We could give her all the 200 gazillion jobs she promised as a receipt.

Big Journalism : TV Guide Blames Fox News, MSNBC For Starting 'New Civil War'

Are you part of the mainstream media, Jamal (you referred to it as "us.")? You said Fox wouldn't know news if it fell in their laps - were you thinking of a specific story that was ignored by Fox? This is actually one of the things that has shocked me about the networks - their blatant attempt to ignore major news. They gave a lot of attention to the story of a megalomaniac pres. whose people broke into the DNC to find out what their campaign plans were, considered it really big stuff. But they ignored this story: a national organization receiving tax-payer money that had "gotten out the vote" to elect the sitting president, was involved in voter fraud and, amazingly, in offering to help a man to set up a brothel for 14-year-old girls kidnapped from a foreign country for the purpose of making them sex slaves. Of course, I know, whether you are in the msm or not, you're not in here for a serious conversation. Your post is banter, not substance. However, I will answer your question: I am not afraid of the msm. I'm disgusted with the unprofessional job they do. I stopped watching them years ago, because I can tell a PR piece from a news story.

What you wrote makes no sense, grandma. 2,000 tea partiers + 1 KKK guy All tea partiers around KKK guy make sure everyone knows they not only don't agree with KKK guy but they refuse to even allow his presence at a Tea Party event. And you get from this that Tea Partiers are KKK racists? It doesn't take a mathematical genius to realize this doesn't compute.

I appreciate so much posts that talk about the historical facts concerning Nazis. Being lazy, I always just took the mainstream liberal interpretation for granted: that conservatism taken to extremist measures = Nazis. Leftist politics taken to extremist meansres = communism.

Big Journalism : So Rep. Shuler Did Not Hear the Phantom 'N-Word' After All

Why in the world would anyone take someone's word about something when the many videos shot at the scene prove it isn't true? It makes me very sad that John Lewis must have made this up. But you have to understand taking someone's word that a group of passionate, patriotic demonstrators are stupid racists, against all evidence, is just as wrong as it would be dismissing Mr. Lewis' statement simply because he's black. You think we're disparaging Mr. Lewis. I'm not. But you're disparaging a group of people who are most probably hard-working, conscientious, faithful patriots who are demonstrating against something that was shoved down our throats with ethics thrown to the wind.

You certainly don't know me (well, duh!) if you think I "would so happily agree to anybody in this world controlling your speech." The antics of Mr. Obama with the FCC, the obvious MSM bias and the attempts of both of them to dismiss Fox News, et al as biased, frustrate and anger me, and I argue the point any time it's presented. I just think not acknowledging the fact that there's a reason why African Americans would be defensive about the n-word and dismissing it like it has no weight is counterproductive - and it gives radicals a footing to make accusations of racism. I know we're fighting a war, and I think we need to fight it intelligently. My experience about "this drivel" is that it doesn't cause the opponent to win, as you say, but causes quite the opposite. I've found when I speak "this drivel" to angry or prejudiced radicals, it has the exact opposite effect.

That's an interesting story and something I've seen the press do also. It's frustrating when they're supposed to be reporting the news, and they go for a sensational story, or go for confirming their beliefs. As I said above, however, racism was horrible at that time in the south. I'm glad it was dealt a near-fatal blow.

I also wanted to say: As for the reply by Texas Stomp (great name, btw), I think "Why" can be part of a true article, if it's done right. One good way is to quote both sides as to why they do it, or experts as to why they do it. IMO, that can work, if the reporter is conscientious and has the time to do it. The problem, of course, is we all have prejudices (i.e. the WaPo man who admitted they were wrong about the n-word but then went on to "prove" the Tea Partiers are racist any way). When I majored in journalism for a while in college (I realized soon I didn't have enough aggression to do a good job as a reporter), they taught us to be objective. A friend who went through journalism decades later told me that they were taught a good reporter helps the reader come to the correct conclusion - that readers are usually too dumb or too ill-informed to come to the wise/correct conclusion on their own. Kind of makes me mad that they taught that in journalism school, but that's what the '60s revolution was all about, right?
