Thanks Sara! I really appreciate your feedback...there are a few things that I want to change and add now, but it was good to get some positive reinforcement too :)

For that play specifically, I would talk about a couple of things. The article that I cited above as being about RR Theory talked a lot about how it can apply to teens' need to feel like a rebel...Romeo and Juliet both kind of take a stand against the normal power systems that are trying to dominate their lives. We often think that teens think that the romance part of that play is cool but this article says it is more the signs of "striking against power" that they relate to. Now, however, I doubt that you feel the need to strike out against your parents :)

Good job on contacting someone in your field! I was super nervous when I tried it, for some reason. It's kind of scary to put yourself out there as someone who is trying to be an expert. Her responses were really specific and even though she hasn't actually done Shakespeare, she had input about renaissance costumes so it applies.

I agree, I think people use Shakespeare as a justification for passion and crazy romance but I think he really cautions against it if you look closely. What's that Sonnet about his mistresses eyes being nothing like the sun, yet he still loves her? That one is all about reason and moderation too.

ahahaha I remember this episode! I have kind of forgotten about it...thanks for reminding me. Gotta love Theo.

I don't know any bands (I'm not cool enough) but you could try posting a flier about it in the HFAC or something...cool music kids always hang out there, right? Or maybe you have tried this but you could like this post to your Facebook or something. I did that and I got a lot of hits to my blog.

Your performance was really cute! Way to share Shakespeare and perform it in one fell swoop (I think he coined that phrase?). I appreciate your insights on organizing a performance, since I think that, if I taught Shakespeare in the classroom (which I am planning on) I would like to have feedback from others that have organized an impromptu performance of amateurs :)

In my Teaching Grammar class last semester (were you in that class too, Johnny?) my teacher talked about the fact that, unlike other languages, English doesn't have an academy that tries to preserve and control our language. English is become a very global language, and therefore it only makes sense that it will continuously be expanding and changing to fit the many groups of people that use it. I mean, think about it: we have taken in all kinds of words from other languages, and there are tons of accents and variations on the English language: ebonics, pidgin, cockney, etc. I think it the nature of the language that it change and expand. And like has already been said...Shakespeare made up so many words! He made the language work for his purposes, kind of like "text lingo" works for the purpose of its users. It's all about purpose, I think.

Joanna, this is a great idea! I think it is really interesting that you thought about fan fiction, because we haven't talked about it in class, but I think it is a really great way that people take the plays and make them their own, and what an easy and probably really effective way to share it, since there are huge forums for this sort of thing.

Laura did a similar thing with Romeo and Juliet: http://shakespearebyanyothername.blogspot.com/201... if you haven't seen it already.

This is great Jessica! I would totally agree with you, and it is so important to look at what we are reading and see why it resonates so deeply.

I thought you might be interested to see the book review that I did of one of the books that you found, and I borrowed: http://wiseishfool.blogspot.com/2011/03/book-revi...

I am excited to try and watching it on Netflix too! I really liked the teaching resources that the website for In Search of Shakespeare had, but I didn't know much about the actual program. Thanks for the heads up...this looks like a really thorough look at his life based on your last couple of posts. You do a really nice job on your posting Sara!
