<description>Thanks for adding your perspective, Matt. Since writing this bit o&amp;#039; rant, I&amp;#039;ve rid myself of a Blackberry and gotten an iPhone (thanks, Verizon). It&amp;#039;s made checking in on Gowalla and Foursquare somewhat more interesting. And to your point of utility, I noticed that when we went to our local Red Robin, they had quite a few specials for those who check in on Foursquare. Which is great for them...I&amp;#039;ll be more likely to frequent them in the future knowing that on my 10th check in, I get a free burger.   So is there anything we can do to spur this along? Keep evangelizing, maybe?   Didn&amp;#039;t know V3 was up to something with AmEx...what&amp;#039;s the skinny? </description>

I can&amp;#039;t remember the URL of a site I saw one time from a design agency and they hid their contact info and portfolio within the cityscape they created for their site. After searching for a while, I gave up. I wonder how many other potential clients did the same? </description>

Consider yourself fortunate that eMusic never raised your monthly subscription rates (happened at least twice for me). And on average, I lost around 5 downloads per month with the shift to a monetary system (even with their loyalty bonuses).  As long as the value is there for you, I hope you continue to enjoy eMusic. I just know that for me, the value no longer substantiated the monthly subscription fees. </description>

<description>Simon, I&amp;#039;ve had some time to reflect on this post and I think I finally understand what&amp;#039;s bothering me about it. *It&amp;#039;s not just about promotion.* I&amp;#039;ve been blogging for six years and still find my blog sits in a state of semi-obscurity. Have I been promoting my blog as you suggest above? Yep. I send updates to Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. I submit posts to content aggregators like Alltop, CustomerThink, and ClienteerHub. I promote my blog in my email signature. So if I&amp;#039;m doing all those things, what&amp;#039;s keeping me from getting the traffic I think I deserve (though I do believe the reader gets the final say)?  Maybe it has to do with the content topics. Granted, my blog isn&amp;#039;t solely devoted to singular topics around marketing, management, leadership, careers...it&amp;#039;s an eclectic all the above. Sometimes I think that variety may be a turnoff to many potential subscribers.  Maybe it has to do with my lack of connection to &amp;quot;kingmakers&amp;quot;. Let&amp;#039;s be honest, getting a solid (and continuous) thumbs-up from the Brogans, Naslunds, and Baers of the world doesn&amp;#039;t hurt. Maybe that oversells their role in spreading traffic to lesser-known bloggers.  Maybe it has to do with my lack of &amp;quot;extras&amp;quot;. I don&amp;#039;t have a book, ebook, or regular speaking gigs.   Okay, so maybe I&amp;#039;m not disagreeing at all with you. Instead, perhaps there is more to marketing a blog than meets the eye. </description>

If managing customer expectations is important, then yes it&amp;#039;s quite a mess. But what if a business doesn&amp;#039;t really care about this? Or perhaps more pointedly, what if the business sees the rants (no matter how even-handed and rational) as minor to their business goals? Business suicide...maybe. But what if the individuals who are expressing these criticisms are seen as liabilities rather than assets who are important to long-term objectives?  Guess my point is that it&amp;#039;s a mess only depending on which side you&amp;#039;re standing. Not everyone places importance on effective online community management and communication. All of which is why I felt it important to write about eMusic as a case study for those online communities who actively want to create a valuable experience for each member. Hopefully, they can avoid a mess of their own. </description>

<description>David, I&amp;#039;ve given this plenty of thought over the past couple of days and I think we&amp;#039;ve arrived at the same possible conclusion: we older members are negatively impacting their bottom line. Rather than seen as a strong element to the brand, we&amp;#039;re really just a cost. At first, I shook my head and said that was just cynicism talking. Older members were what got them to this point in their business...why would they disregard them so freely? Unfortunately, there&amp;#039;s nothing new about putting profit before people so really nothing crazy going on here.  I&amp;#039;ll classify this as both mismanagement and indifference...but it also depends largely on what the company&amp;#039;s goal is. If it&amp;#039;s to shed the past and rebrand as something else, then the eMusic management appears to be succeeding. They&amp;#039;ll move on with a different customer focus. Will they succeed as a business with an objective like this? I can&amp;#039;t say.  I think like many of the older faithful, I want to be wrong. I really do. But I&amp;#039;ve heard nothing - publicly or privately from eMusic (and I know they&amp;#039;ve read this post) that encourages me to draw any other conclusion than the one you offer. If the desire is to shed long-time customers, I&amp;#039;ll give the folks at eMusic an A+ for effort. </description>
