OMG the smoking indoors thing always gets me. Like I think I'm watching a movie that was made not all that long ago and all of the sudden people are lighting up in the office/restaurant/whatever and I realized that A) smoking indoors didn't really end all that long ago and/or 2. the movie I'm watching is actually from two decades past and I am an ancient old crone.
I don't know how hard it is to set up a corporation/llc/SOME KIND OF BUSINESS ENTITY FOR GODDESS'S SAKE in Canada, but its really not that complicated here. Granted I do mostly Delaware entities, and they are like actually the easiest (which on a side note has more to do with why people form entities there than nefarious tax evasion reasons) but I have to imagine they aren't that hard in elsewhere.
Can we please make HermAYNe a more regular thing? It's so delicious. And no, I will never apologize for that terrible pun.
It's OK Mallory, my list of concerts (which is maybe like 20 shows long) includes seeing Macy Gray TWICE. It also includes Grace Jones and My Bloody Valentine (2x) and Joanna Newsom (3x), but still...
Just commiseration. I have been pounding water (both coconut and regular type) and Advil. This is just not what I wanted my Monday to be like. Also, now I'm realizing I don't really understand the question I'm supposed to be answering because it was explained to me in like 2 seconds and I can't get a hold of the mid-level associate who gave me this assignment for clarification.
Can we discuss how I somehow got very drunk last night after a dinner party I hosted with friends and I don't really understand how it happened and now i have an urgent request to review a bunch of contracts to determine the meaning of a certain term and the printer is printing them like one page every 5 seconds and my brain feels like its falling out?
Ugh, I'm nervous I'm sort of doing that to a colleague (I'm slightly superior to her), but she just started at the firm and hasn't quite learned how to navigate certain people (senior to both of us) who want things done in a certain way (for no logical reason, but you aren't going to win that war) because she has no experience with them. At first I tried to just be like hey let me show you the ropes, but she fights me every step of the way so now I've sort of started abusing my slight seniority and telling her what to do so I don't have to have a 10 minute argument about it. I'm a bad feminist.
That's not really what the book is ultimately about at least after the first 50-100 pages. It's an extremely deceptive logline.
Read her first novel, People in the Trees instead! It's totally weird and captivating and showcases Yanagihara's inimitable and unique style in a form that is much less overwhelming. There's still darkness (but like if you can handle a Lolita-esque narrator, then you should be fine) but you should read it.
Even though Zenon's aunt ends up with a dude, for most of the movie, she is basic stock character Hippy Lesbian Aunt. Also that sad rich girl from Earth who was Zenon's frenemy was totally a proto-lez.
