One of the things Star Trek is best at is taking non-organic, sentient lifeforms like Data and the Doctor and using them to explore what true sentience is--and humanity. Dejaren is the acknowledgement that if Data and the Doctor are the best parts of sentience and humanity, there is a dark side as well.

Mark Watches : Mark Watches 'Steven Universe': S01E18 - Beach Party

Okay so, I admit it... I haven't seen a lot of the earlier SU episodes. I've kind of watched them on YouTube in whatever order I could, and some episodes are difficult to find in a watchable format. If I want to watch them, I have to buy them... which I would be totally willing to do if I were not a poor graduate student subsisting on student loans (buy my book). So I've never seen this episode. :( Sad times.

Mark Watches : Mark Watches 'Deep Space Nine': S05E22 - Children of Time

This one hurts my heart so much. All those people. All those lives, all that history, all of that strength and ingenuity and success... all gone. And the thing is that I can't blame anyone for their actions. I can't blame Yedrin for wanting to make what he felt were better decisions than Jadzia, or for wanting to ensure the continued existence of the colony. Nor can I fault Future Odo for wanting to save Kira's life the way he was unable to do before. I can't blame Sisko and O'Brien for wanting to go home, or O'Brien for being the last hold out because Jake is pretty much grown, but Miles' daughter is still young and his son an infant, and he would be missing their entire lives. Not to mention, he's still madly in love with Keiko and can't imagine any circumstances where he would give up on her. I can't blame any of the residents of the colony if they felt resentment toward any of the crew who wanted to go home instead of be thrown 200 years into the past. I wouldn't have blamed anyone who still felt that way when the Defiant took off, on either side. I don't blame Kira for being angry with Future Odo. It's not an easy problem with villains and a good guy and black and white morality. There is no "right choice" here, really, because staying has its consequences just as serious as the consequences of leaving. But all those children who now never existed. My heeeeaaarrt.

Perhaps that is the reason this turns into a subversion of the siren story, but it’s not this episode’s saving grace. Nope, because every episode's saving grace is Janeway. Always Janeway. Gods, this had so much potential to be something really interesting and then it just failed completely. I'm with you; I wanted to see them commit to the semi-ridiculous concept of Harry actually being Taresian. See him struggle with his identity, and then with the drive to go home (Tarsesia) implanted in his genetic code, versus his completely personal drive to go HOME (Earth). And it would have given him interesting material in future episodes as he continued to deal with 1) the truth of his heritage and 2) the genetic encoding. But no. No, we couldn't have that episode. It was far more important for us to have evil sirens who kill men.

There’s a pain that often comes with non-heterosexual people realizing that their choices are inherently limited, and this sort of anxiety is something that’s often hard to explain to others. As a romantic asexual, I hear you. Sigh.

I love the story with the Changeling baby, of course, but I was kind of fascinated with the birth scenes and how the writers made Bajoran labor much, much different from human labor. It's pretty much the exact opposite. Achieving perfect stillness and relaxation... and they also managed to show that even though there's no pain like human labor, it's still not easy to achieve the state of relaxation necessary for birth to happen. Also, Shakaar and Miles being kicked out of the room for being asshats. Hahaha.

Normally I try to just ignore the awkwardness of the Civil War metaphor (why is Q's faction the Confederates????) and just enjoy the absurdity of everything else. Because the Civil War metaphor is really awkward and as you pointed out, falls apart really quickly.

How do you relax in a mud bath when tons of people are watching? Is it appropriate to take a child into a mud bath like that??? Lwaxana comes from a culture that places less emphasis on bodily shame and modesty. Betazoids get married in the nude, and it's perfectly acceptable. To the point where Deana is shocked and horrified that her mother would not be naked at her own wedding. When Lwaxana appears naked to her wedding after all, it's the best part of this cluttered and confusing episode for me because HELL YEAH. That's right, Lwaxana. Be proud of yourself, your body, and don't let anyone tell you how to behave at your own damn wedding!

Why do glitches in the Enterprise computer often first manifest in replicator malfunctions? I've always assumed it had something to do with computer protections? Like, replicators are non-essential functions compared to life-support and warp-drive and all the other things. So they likely have fewer protections against viruses and other things built into their systems. And if you're going to have any system be your warning system against weird shit, it might as well be the replicators. They (probably) won't kill anyone by malfunctioning.

*waves* Hi, Mark! Long time. I suggest that at some point after you watch TNG, you read the ST novel Q-SQUARED by Peter David. It's a great novel that directly relates to this episode and ties it in with later TNG characters and things. :) I'm not suggesting you do it for Mark Reads, just that you would probably enjoy it.
