Mondoweiss : The 'special vocabulary' of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the US media

Okay Thom, Merriam-Webster defines "imperialism" thusly: Main Entry: im·pe·ri·al·ism the policy, practice, or advocacy of extending the power and dominion of a nation especially by direct territorial acquisitions or by gaining indirect control over the political or economic life of other areas

Okay, Thom thinks "colonies" is technically inaccurate. Other people think "settlements" is Orwellian and suggest legality or uncontentiousness. So, I have a couple ideas: How about "Squatter Villages", "Invasion Zones", or "Impreralist homesteads"?

It would not surprise me in the least if the term "settlement" was chosen after running focus groups in the U.S. I think quite a few Americans think of the embellished history they learned about Jamestown and Plymouth Rock when they hear that term.

Mondoweiss : 'Weekly Standard' accuses Sullivan of anti-Semitism

There's no grand conspiracy and Jews aren't evil. However, that American media is heavily influenced by pro-Jewish/Israel interests is so well-known as to make it laughable when someone claims it isn't. The ONLY reason that even responsible discussion of this fact, along with stories about Jews and the state of Israel, is not in the media is directly because of those influences and the VERY thuggish silencing of dissenters.

Womanist Musings : Black and Blowing Mom A Kiss Means No Diploma

In my opinion, the fact the kid is black had everything to do with it. I think Lukas, certainly, would have been pissed had a student of any color did the same thing. But, I really think that many whites, though they'll never admit it, hold very patriarchal attitudes toward people of color and a deep-set notion that, though people of color desere "tolerance", whites are indeed superior. In other words, I think the idea of being, in her mind, publically mocked ty a member of the inferior race set her over the edge.

Womanist Musings : The Name Of This Blog Is

I actively was trying to find a website like this when I came across it. I wanted a place where I could listen to women's concerns (I'm a dude) in an inclusive way. I also wanted to avoid being chastized by white middle class and upper middle class women whose (sometimes) incredibly aggressive and rude behavior I feel has more to do with being spoiled than deepfelt concern for the topic at hand.

Womanist Musings : In The Name Of Guns The Council Of Conservative Americans Dresses Sotomayor In KKK Cap

I actually think, even after reading the transcript, that the statement "looks bad". But, I honestly believe that the line of discussion she was on when those words came out stem from this sentence: "In our private conversations, Judge Cedarbaum has pointed out to me that seminal decisions in race and sex discrimination cases have come from Supreme Courts composed exclusively of white males." I believe she was speaking specifically about sex and race discrimination cases, in which case, I think she has a legitimate point. You have to admit that the principle of equality for ALL American citizens was floundering during decades of white-male only Supreme Courts that upheld, among other things, Jim Crow laws.

(Most) Conservatives have no damn shame. They don't understand people of color at all. It's all a big game to them so they can get back in power and do what they do best: Piss on the poor, turn back the civil rights clock, and suck corporate cock. To them, Obama's victory simply meant that the Democrats marketing and "product" were more enticing to the consumers (aka voters). That's why, right away after the election, we started seeing them parading their around their sellout tokens, including Michael Steele and Bobby Jindal.

You're not getting it. Sotomayor is not complaining that Thomas is Black, it's a nuanced statement. She IS saying that, in a VERY important government position for which each marginalized group (African-Americans, Latinos, Asian-American/Pacific Islanders, etc....) has been waiting a loooooooooooooooonnggg time to get representation, the Republicans gave a lifetime appointment to a traitor. It's a huge slap in the face for all people of color, especially African-Americans as they will likely have to wait a long time for their turn to come around again. Three more examples of the "slap in the face" traitor tokens during the Bush administration are Alberto Gonzalez, John Yoo, and Condi Rice.

Womanist Musings : Gordon Ramsay on Tracy Grimshaw: a Case of Foot-in-Mouth Disease

Ramsay is a mentally-ill, insecure, bully man-child. Obviously, this incident is disgusting. I must say, however, Renee, that I think that this statement, "Men are seldom demeaned in a way that specifically assaults their masculinity" needs a little clarification. I think what you mean by that is masculinity in terms of men's bodies. I think that is changing for the worse for men, but, it is still accurate to use the word "seldom". But, I think of masculinity as also encompassing masculine behavioral traits (which are masculine by definition but certainly not exclusive to men) such as aggressiveness, competitiveness, ambition, and dominance. Personally, I don't watch TV much, but from what I've seen the bumbling, helpless, lazy man who could not do anything without his female partner is a fairly common character.

And, he sees no problem. Wow. I at least have to give some credit to white males for their uncanncy knack for routinely one-upping themselves.

Womanist Musings : Beauty Boot Camp

I understand that pariarchy, socialization, economic disparities, etc... lead to these kind of things. But, I swear to God, if I were an alien that just flew down I'm afraid I would see things another way. If every woman on earth stopped wearing make-up, stopped shaving their legs and armpits, and started belching and farting in public, straight guys would be grossed out and disoriented for about a month, then they'd go right back trying to get your attention. Personally, I wish it would happen. But, I'm realistic and I know that the divide and conquer processes of oppressors have been going on for centuries and it's not that simple.

Womanist Musings : Obama Promotes Choice in Cairo

I thought he did a good job regarding his comments about women. I like the way he didn't get preachy or overly-specific. What I took from it, particularly with the education comments, was basically to give women the tools so they may navigate society and their lives as they see fit.

As a dude, I relate to what she is saying. I'm not gonna comment on the particulars of feminism, just the way I relate to what she said. I think there is a weird "energy" in the U.S. regarding assumptions and expectations. I know I've felt pressure throughout my life to be or act this way or that way because I'm too "A" or not enough "B". Judging is the real problem in my opinon. While judging in terms of considering others to be innately subhuman or otherwise inferior is mostly the province of whites, less severe judging is rampant in every sector of society. Clothes, mannerisms, how feminine you act, how masculine you act, musical tastes, body type, sexuality, and on and on and on. Although, I must say, I did see this guy today with the stupidest shirt and a ridiculous haircut and.......lol...j/k

Nunya, I think you kinda put people on the defensive in here with your initial comment that started, "I'll feel more offended when women stop making these same comments about men. Women want us to find them attractive no matter their body type, and don't want us looking at women that fit a "norm", but you never see women having calendars of men shaped like me in their offices." I don't think those are your real feelings and your statement comes from frustration and hurt. Nonetheless, in my opinion, you would have been better served clarifying by using words like "some" or "sometimes". Your opening statements sound like ALL women. Being how you're in a women-oriented blog, that causes people even more irritation. Just my two cents.
