I lived in a house perched on a Vermont hillside for a few months after college. One morning I woke up to three field mice stuck in the kitchen sink, but they were small enough that I just scooped them into a coffee mug and returned them outside. Didn't live there during a big storm, so we didn't lose power, but in the winter it was considered an impressive feat to drive your car all the way up to the top of the driveway in one shot.

I used to live in a haunted house in college, one of those big rambling 1840s Greek Revival mansions, up in the attic where access to the cupola was. The story went that the original owner had a daughter that he locked away up there and she ended up hanging herself.

I never saw anything and don't really believe in it, but the house did creak and shake in weird ways sometimes.

That message pops up ten minutes into the third episode in a row. Every time, I revert to my teenage self: "OH MY GOD Netflix, why are you always hassling me?"

I did kale/potato/red bean/ham soup last week! My pot wasn't big enough for all the kale so I ended up eating half the soup, then adding more kale and another can of beans. It worked out pretty deliciously. I think I might do a chicken soup thing this weekend since I have like 15 bags of thighs in my freezer right now and I'm trying to be cheap for the rest of the month.

I've also been looking at Mark Bittman's Vegan Before 6 thing because I want to get away from eating eggs every goddamn day for breakfast.

OH MAN. I just looked up the actual editorial and this version is actually only slightly embellished.

"To a Vermonter, or any country person, common sense is what keeps you alive. Liars and cheats may not have been welcome, but you wouldn’t tolerate a man without common sense; he would most likely get you killed. A man who was not dependable might shoot another man’s dog when rabbit hunting. (Tom once hunted with a man who did just that and wrapped the offender’s 12-gauge around a maple. The dog recovered.) And you would be careless if you asked him to help out in the sugarhouse; he would be likely to burn your front pan every year. He might also siphon the diesel fuel out of your tractor, jack a deer off your land, or run off with your wife."
