Definitely a silly rule. Especially when the establishment serving alcohol predates the church.
The city should rule that churches locating in an existing commercial building or locating within 400 feet of an existing commercial district shall have no say over the qualifying commercial uses in that commercial district.

"Commission members thought the First Congregational Church was pursuing an agreement with an Iowa City developer to buy a historic home the church owned at 1600 Washington Ave. SE — until the church took out a demolition permit."

That is pure hogwash. My understanding is that the intention to move or demolish this building was quite clear. Why else would the church offer it for free to anyone who wanted to move it off the property?

JBarrett, I suggest that you review the vacancy and occupancy issue in this building for the past couple of decades before you make more unfounded comments about occupied buildings.

You should also understand that sometimes making investments in people and the community they live in involves minimizing or eliminating the proven liabilities and hazards.

You come up with the money to do it Harry. I'd bet the church would listen if you could get 'er done in a timely manner. From what I hear though, it sounds like someone else already offered to move the building, and then discovered how much it was going to cost to do it, then backed out. So if you're aware of all the actual costs and have the money on hand right now, then go ahead, make the offer.

The Judges made their ruling based on the laws already on the books. They didn't have to create a law. They exactly fulfilled their mandated role.

Now go love thy neighbor already.
