She's 14 - just turned, too. I think it might only be mentioned on the jacket flap and back cover. I don't remember it in the story.

LOVE the masks! Super cute and any wearable craft is always a hit.
I also love the "I'm not cute" story so, so much. When I used it, it was for an owl theme, and my kids all made owl masks after. Then they kept saying "I'm NOT cute" to one another.

Like this story time idea a lot!

This book is tearing my heart apart. I have really never cried or just plain REACTED so much to a book since Some Girls Are. But this even blows that out of the water.

I don't, unfortunately, think it's over the top at all. One of my best friends in high school was a football player -- a kicker, not even someone on the field all that much -- and what he told me about what went on shocked me and was the ultimate reason he chose to give up the game.

I sure hope this book gets a lot more attention. It so deserves it.

I'm doing a pre-reader summer reading level, as well. I can't wait to compare notes. My plan is like yours -- just literacy activities to check off.

This day sounds pretty calm compared to so many of your others!

I am dying dying dying to read this one. I have been loving Nelson's stuff and this one looks like it won't disappoint. Glad it got the Abby seal of approval!

I actually thought this was a pretty funny book -- but maybe because it was uncomfortably realistic and not realistic, if that makes sense. Like you pointed out, the key to Scotty's voice for me was that it wasn't all guy humor. There was a ton of guy humor, but the book didn't rely on that to convey the story or to build the character.

Never has a book given me so many nightmares. And could he have gotten better marketing this year?

I'm freakin' that this is going to be my life this week more than I should be.

I listened to this one too, and I must say this was THE book that convinced me Joel Johnstone was a god. When I read After Ever After, I couldn't get his voice out of my mind and was quite disappointed I wasn't listening to it, rather than reading it.

My biggest, biggest piece of advice is this: KEEP READING. Library school does a terrible job of reminding you that a big part of the job is the books themselves. It's tricky. You have to learn all the administrative stuff, as well as all of the theoretical stuff, as well as the technology, but you have so little opportunity to READ and KEEP UP with the trends. And every interview you have will have reader's advisory questions. Read widely.

To add on to your school librarian comment, it's key to know what the requirements are in each state. In Texas, you have to have been a teacher for 2 years to become a certified media specialist. So you need a degree in teaching AND experience.

I like your comments on interning, and I also suggest doing more than one internship if possible. Another thing I did was USE my local public library. It's easy not to when you're in library school, but the things I learned and discovered by hitting up multiple branches of the Austin Public Library really helped me think about what I'd like to do in my own teen areas in terms of displays, reader's advisory, collection building and layout, and more.

Great post, Abby.
