Here's a map of the high school:

Dear Steve Zemke,

I don't agree that the alternative area is a good choice for a building. From what I can see on the map, there isn't a lot of open space for expansion there. This "open grassy area" is tiny and quite frankly, building a structure there would look ugly.

Aesthetics aside, I want to know why your group is so quick to sue such a charitable and cash strapped organization? If you have taken steps to avoid a legal battle, your group did a very poor job of letting the public know about your concerns. Quite frankly, this was a poor choice of a battle to pick.

As a volunteer for Treemendous Seattle, and Earth Corps, I share your belief that healthy parks and trees are a valuable resource for our community. However, I am disappointed with your current stance on this issue. I think you are doing far more damage than good by attacking the school district in court. Protecting our environment is as much a PR issue as it is a technological or physical work issue. And on this front, you and Save the Trees are causing harm to the movement. Please respectfully step aside. Your mission is too important for you to act in such a radical manner.

Preventing school expansion for a handful of trees isn't "liberal", it's a radical. A true "liberal" would respect the rights of a property holder, and is for less government intervention when it comes to these rights. This act by Steve Zemke and Save The Trees is a radical act.

As for school vouchers and the meta-issue of efficient use of resources, I can't name any private schools in the area that could provide as good an education with the same budget as the public school system. People, we're getting a heck of a good deal with the public schools. As a product of the public school system, I can say that it's a fine investment the government makes each year.
