Ho boy. At my age, I know lots of people like this. They don't realize that America gives you the opportunity to do whatever you want, but never guarantees that this will get you everything you want. My sister dated this guy for three years, and I never liked him, but when he mentioned that he was "trying to get on food stamps," I wanted to punch him. You don't TRY to get on food stamps, you useless clod! This was a 25-year-old guy in excellent health who felt that working in fast food, retail, etc. was beneath him because his parents bought him a $120,000 degree in a subject which turned out to be totally useless. Entitlement at its best (or worst, depending on how you look at it).

I meant that the test my have been unintentionally biased, but that does not mean it's unfair. That's why I brought up the whole Asian-American culture clash thing. American business culture may be "biased" against Asian Americans because its "right' answers go against traditional Asian values. However, this doesn't mean it's unfair. Life is unfair, and that means some people have to work harder than others for the same goal. People like Sotomayor seem to expect the system to change so that everyone can be "equal." But we're not equal. Sorry my point wasn't clear. I think we're all in agreement.

I couldn't believe there was that option when I voted in Alabama last year. I've always said that people who vote a party ticket deserve what they get. Unfortunately, the rest of us have to suffer, too.

Everyone may think poverty stinks, but there are those who would rather complain about it than get another job, go back to school, stop feeding unnecessary habits, etc. I would say that these people DO desire to live in poverty if they're not willing to do anything about it. Just like a lot of women claim they "weren't trying to get pregnant." If you had unprotected sex, you WERE trying to get pregnant. Compassion and kindness are instrumental to successful capitalism because capitalism cannot succeed without others. If you are a jerk to your suppliers, they can cut you off. If you don't treat your employees well, they can decide to work for someone who treats them better. If you give bad service, your customers can and will take their business elsewhere.

Hmm. You are making me think in all kinds of directions here! (It's a good thing.) I wouldn't say the problem is that black culture has failed to evolve, but that it has DE-evolved. There was a time in this country when it was pointless for black people to aspire to certain things. But though things have changed, people like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton continue to insist to blacks that they can never succeed at the level of other races, so why bother? And young people take this message to heart. As recently as the 70s, black women gave birth out of wedlock at a lower rate than white women. Since then, the disparity has skyrocketed. Do the Jacksons and Sharptons of this country thing this is a good thing? And look what happened to Bill Cosby when he tried to suggest that blacks should hold each other accountable for behaviors which were destroying them. I think whites have done as much for blacks now as they possibly can. The black community needs leaders which will demand responsibility and do away with self-pity and shifting the blame.

The test may, in fact, have been created so that fewer minorities did well. But does that make it unfair? I have a book about why Asian-Americans do not climb the corporate ladders as well as whites, and how we can combat this. Many integral aspects of Asian culture do not translate well into American business culture. For example, Asian people tend to think that good work will speak for itself, whereas Americans are taught to toot their own horns, so to speak. Also, questioning a superior's decision, even if you believe it is wrong, may be considered rude and even subordinate in Asian culture, but in America it shows bravery and intelligence and might even cause your boss to consider you an even more valuable employee. So despite being good workers, many Asian-Americans don't advance as fast as their white counterparts because they do not appear to be ambitious or willing to take risks. Whose "fault" is this? Does this make the whole system unfair or biased? Should American business culture have to adapt to give equal advantage to Asian-Americans?

Reichert came to speak to the College Republicans several times when I was at UW. He always seemed to be a sensible guy. I can only guess that he is either going to get some substantial financial gain for this, or he really thinks that going RINO will get him reelected. We'll see!

I completely agree that the left seems to think that some people are poor only because others are rich, or that it is completely forgivable to sponge off of the rest of society if you were born into unusually difficult circumstances. Whoever said life was fair? Some of us really are born with silver spoons; others have to work and scrape for everything. The left believes that because some people don't have to work hard to succeed, nobody should. Unfortunately, these lessons may not come easily unless you witness it for yourself. My parents raised two flaming liberals. We both went to expensive private colleges, the kind that churn out more liberals, but I flunked out and had to go to work and enroll in community college. I met a guy whose parents had seven kids and didn't bother to make sure any of them finished high school. He had a baby daughter with his ex-girlfriend; it was her third child, and she was 19! The father of her older son was in prison; the other son's father has probably been back there a couple times since then. She lived on welfare, of course, didn't work (kind of hard to when you keep getting pregnant), and lived in a much nicer place than I've ever been able to afford on my own. Some people said that she didn't know any better, that her mother also had multiple children with different scumbags. I'll let you decide.
