Last year was abysmal, quite possibly the worst team in the nation. Games were over in the first quarter. This year we may be losing by the final score but there is real competition out there. It's our lack of depth thats too hard to overcome. We need some good recruiting, solidify the lines and we'll be back in the mix. That being said the University ought to review their policies concerning varsity athletes. Stanford offers academic credit for varsity participation. Nebraska and pretty much every school in the SEC do it as well but don't really advertise it publicly. These guys put in as much if not way more time preparing for games than they do for classes and should be treated fairly in that respect. It took Carroll several season to assemble the talent he needed to become a national powerhouse. He recruited like no one before him. How many coaches dare to go into the inner city at night to broker truces between rival gangs. Carroll commanded this type of respect and it paid off. But regardless of who followed him, the Trojans were going to take a hit from reduced scholarships and Haden knew it. In walks Lane Kiffin. He's unlikable. He can't coach game day. He's possibly the worst recruiter in the conference. Haden knew this guy would come in, burn the place down and be very easy to fire once the sanctions started to expire. He puts an interim coach in place. All the pressure is now lifted from the team. Win or lose, they'll be back next year with a new coach and a new attitude. Recruits no longer block every phone call with a 310 area code. And the "search" is now the hot topic in L.A. instead of the resurgent Bruins. The final piece of the puzzle is the new hire. You can bet he'll be a proven recruiter, not someone like Jack Del Rio who can't name a single California high school coach.
