pastapadre.com : MLB 2K10 Producer Q&A

Forgive me if I'm not convinced by a 2K producer admitting their previous year's version was poor and that "this is the year." It's the same thing they say every year for their baseball and hockey games. Sorry 2K. Most of the game buying public is on to your yearly publicity push and they aren't buying it. That's why you're hemorrhaging money and about to have to cancel your hockey franchise. That's also why you wish you could get the 800 pound gorilla (MLB license) off your back so you could stop some of the bleeding there as well. Bet you all wish you could jump into a time machine and take that EA offer now, don't you? By the way, who wants to place a bet with me on whether or not there will be a demo before release. I'll take "no demo" for 1,000. Any takers?

pastapadre.com : EA to Make Announcement Regarding Tiger Woods

I've said it before on here and I'll say it again: I hope that if this does go down EA seizes the opportunity to really step up their game for the 360/PS3 versions. Without the TW name to sell copies I hope they finally deliver more in the gameplay department because those versions have gone totally stale for me. Although in the end it probably wouldn't be enough to trump the great Wii experience last year, so I guess for me it doesn't really matter if they innovate on the consoles or not. I can't see going back to controlling a golf game with a standard controller, but an improved experience for those that don't have a Wii would be nice. As far as the series being canceled outright as some have suggested on here, that could be a possibility on 360/PS3. Maybe the game goes Wii exclusive for a year as I don't see them passing up on those sales. By the time the version after this year releases Project Natal should be out and they can take advantage of that and possibly bring back Tiger to boot. I'm not sure when PS3's motion controlled thing is supposed to drop. Another possibility is they go the "arcade" route and just release a download game in the style of NFL and NHL arcade for the 360/PS3. That would be a change would it? A sim version for Wii and an arcade version for 360/PS3. It's a long shot, but with EA you never know.

pastapadre.com : Your Top Game of 2009

I voted for Tiger Woods 10, but with the caveat that I'm only voting for the Wii version. The 360 version has been stagnant for the past two to three years in my opinion. The Wii motion plus really works with TW10. It's also the only sports game I still play regularly. No other sports game really wowed me this year. If I owned a PS3 I would probably have voted MLB The Show as my top game, but I don't.

pastapadre.com : Thoughts on Madden Ultimate Team

I'm certainly not interested in it at all if the only way to get good cards is buy purchasing them. If the amount of playtime required to acquire the tokens needed to get good cards is too unrealistic I simply won't even bother with this. If it turns out to be reasonable though, I could see myself getting caught up in the whole collectible aspect. By the way, wasn't it just 3 or so years ago when Madden Cards were in the game annually as an included feature that didn't require the purchase of any cards?

I've been thinking up ways to explain to my wife why I'm going to be buying a new game system for just one game since the day I traded in 2k10 for Xbox 360 last year (probably about a week after I bought it). At that time I swore I would never touch a 2k baseball game again, and I'm sticking to it. Now I just need to figure out how to smoothly break it to her when The Show releases this year. She just doesn't understand the fact that someone can spend nearly 400 dollars to get one game. She does know what a baseball nut I am though, but this one is going to be a tough sell. I wish I had the all black Xbox 360. Then I could at least try to be covert and switch them out when I play The Show. She probably wouldn't even recognize that they are different systems.

pastapadre.com : 2K Response Regarding NHL Series

The worst part for 2k is the exclusivity deal they signed with MLB. They are getting crushed by The Show and that's only on one system. If MLB 2k10 is a bomb -and we have every right to believe it will be based on past performance and the bad will they have built up with several garbage MLB releases in a row- they are in line to lose a boat load of money on that game too. Their problem in that situation is they kinda have to make an MLB game until after 2012. What are they going to do, drop that from their roster when they have exclusivity rights for 3rd party development? 2k only has basketball, and they are starting to lose their grip on that as well. This company has really tumbled. What a fall from grace. I'm no 2k hater. It wasn't but a few years ago when I played their games almost exclusively. I just like good games, and they have not been delivering very much in that regard.

I saw 2k10 in the Target clearance rack last weekend for 19.99. It's been out what, 2 or 3 months? This game was a monumental bust and I definitely don't see them throwing good money after bad with this series any longer.

pastapadre.com : EA Sports Facing Tough Decision on Tiger

First off, I'm a bit wary about all these women that are coming out of the woodwork. That said, even if half of them are telling the truth it's a pretty damning indictment on Tiger's formerly pristine image. As far as his relationship with EA, I get the feeling they're going to ride it out a little longer and see what else comes to light and how other companies react. The fact that he is getting dropped by many companies doesn't bode well for his future with EA. Still, who else would EA get as the face of the franchise? Nobody is even in the same stratosphere as far as being immediately recognized and linked to his sport as much as Tiger is with golf. The tough decision EA has to make is whether or not that image has taken too much of a nose dive to make it worth using him as the spokesperson for their golf game. Personally, I'd like to see EA use this as a jumping off point to really change their golf game. Aside from the Wii version with Motion Plus I feel this franchise has grown incredibly stale over the years. Maybe by dropping Tiger it will force EA to concentrate more on the game and rely less on simply using Tiger to help sell the game. It's unfortunate for EA that Project Natal isn't coming a little sooner. They could use the momentum of releasing with Natal capabilities to sort of offset losing Tiger, if they do indeed drop him. This game -much like it proved to be with Wii Motion Plus- seems like a natural fit for Natal. No matter what, the people at EA are in a bad situation. It's pretty much a no win situation for them. And with the losses they've been taking over the past year they can't be too happy about the whole situation.

pastapadre.com : Quick Hit Football Overview

This game is in no way expecting to compete with Madden or anything on the console. It isn't even designed for the same general demographic. Failure or success isn't always determined by millions of dollars in revenue and global recognition. This is probably run by either just one person or a very small team. Think about OOTP baseball. That was started, and still mostly maintained, by just one guy...from Germany no less. If you saw a baseball text game just coming to market being made by one guy from Germany what chance would you have given that? You mentioned FOF and Total Pro..same deal, so why the cynicism? I wish the creators of this endeavor the best of luck. I'm certainly curious and am going to look into it.

pastapadre.com : Draft Combine Selling Relatively Well

Actually I'm one of those that is disappointed that this is doing well and it has nothing to do with whether I like 2K or not. To me this sets a dangerous precedent. Don't be surprised to see companies making you pay for demos if this keeps up. They might not market their offerings as a paid demo, but if they are slick and give it some fancy title and don't release anything else that people can use to check out the game then that is exactly what we'll get. I'm totally against this and I did not and will not buy draft combine.

Ya know, it's funny. Every single time there is an unpopular decision from EA you can count on the "I'm NEVER spending another penny on an EA game again" people to show up on message boards. I just wish I could put together data on how many of these people actually hold true to this. Judging by EA's success I would say it isn't very many. Internet message boards are curious things.

Honestly, with Madden being the huge cash cow that it is what incentive is there for EA to give customers a good feel for the game through a demo? It's not like they have to convince people to buy this game. They will get their millions in sales even if they put out no demo whatsoever. Do I think this stinks? Of course. Do I think it will hurt EA in any way at all? No, I don't. And that's exactly why they can pull this kind of thing.
