Rhythm Planet : An End But a Beginning Too: And the New Rhythm Planet Program

I'm terribly sorry to get this news, even more so because last Sunday was one of the few times I wasn't listening to your show! Tom, your Sunday show has been a warm presence in my Los Angeles life since I moved here years ago, and my cd collection is a testament to the many fine artist you've introduced me to over the years. I wish you nothing but the best, but I think this is an awful, pigheaded decision by the network brass.

Wonkette : Fox & Friends Embarrassed By Youth Even Douchier Than They Are

Wow. I really can't believe they didn't vet that guy better. I'm sure the Romney campaign was thrilled to see this being the example of new converts. I wonder how many seconds into that fiasco was Gretchen's eardrum nearly blown out by a producer with brains telling her to give McDouchey the hook.

Big Hollywood : 'Act of Valor' Review: A Fist-Pumping Antidote to Hollywood's Anti-Military Propaganda

Don't be sorry! Well said. But truth be told, Variety is a shadow of its former self--film grosses are so widely available that's it's really changed the way we view film success--don't hit that huge number week 1--the world thinks your film is terrible and it gets no chance to grow & find an audience. Re: films for you & your wife to enjoy: give "Scarlet Street" w/ Edward G. Robinson a spin (but be prepared for a not-hapy ending), as well as "Mildred Pierce," "Touch of Evil," "White Heat" and of course "The Big Sleep." Then you may as well watch "L.A. Confidential" to see how all that noire made it to the 20th century pretty much intact.

Firstly--the egg was stupid and pretentious, on that we can agree. But the fictional persona of "The Dictator" wasn't invited to the ceremony--Sascha Baron Cohen was. And that's the only one who should show up. Likewise "The Muppets" are invited--if the puppeteers showed up sans felt characters, that would be wrong, too.

It makes rather a difference if you are invited specifically _to_ perform (Gaga) as opposed to crashing the party when you are specifically asked _NOT_ to (Cohen). And since the Oscars don't give away commercial time, they're within their rights, IMHO. The circumstances are not identical.

Big Hollywood : 'Coriolanus' Review: Fiennes Directorial Debut Does Shakespeare Proud

Saw this today--very well done. Fiennes has the scariest eyes on the planet, and even Butler seems a little less ferocious next to him. An excellent parallel to the cynical, media-driven politics of today and I suppose if you really wanted to, you could pretzel it to fit a particular political view but in a story with no real heroes it almost doesn't seem worth it, IMHO. I have to say--Redgrave is brilliant in this. She may be a batty old lady whose personal politics I abhor, but damn--she is good at her job.

I get that. What I'm saying is I'm not sure the lure is there for top talent to create new projects that people have zero urgency to watch. For example--bahiabob below mentioned Downton Abbey--yeah, you can stream it--but the overwhelming number of Americans watching it are doing so either when it airs or dvr'd recordings of it a day or two later (the way most Americans seem to watch tv these days, myself included). But they're discussing it at roughly the same time as it's being broadcast, not waiting months to watch the whole thing at once. (it's a water cooler show) Why would they need to switch to Netflix to watch a show they're already getting? (Heck, since it's on PBS you don't even need basic cable to get it as long as you have decent reception.) And it's arguably become a genuine cultural phenomenon through traditional broadcast channels.

But I don't need to stream Downton--it's right there every Sunday on my PBS station. I can watch it then or dvr it to watch whenever I want. But that's a bad example because I seem to be the only human on Earth to who finds it insanely dull, no matter how pretty the clothes and sets are. I love costume pieces, I just couldn't give a rip about those wan people dithering cover the entail. Lillyhammer looks mildly interesting, but I don't particularly have an urgent need to see Little Stevie do anymore acting.

"Now can I say “I told you so?” Actually, things are happening faster than even I expected. The studios have to go to where the customers are going." Sadly, customers are not flocking to "The Artist," even with the bountiful good press. And "The Artist"/Weinstein deal isn't for mainstream fare, but for their foreign films and documentaries that already aren't finding a wide customer base. Will be interesting to see if the deal increases viewership of more esoteric stuff, but since Netflix doesn't realease ratings I guess we'll never know?
