Reminds me of being stationed in Iceland. Saw a lot more greens in the summer and purples in the winter (if you could see through the clouds).

Yeah..I've seen what a Mark 48 torpedo can do to a decommissioned destroyer or LST. Luckily, I got out before I had the chance to experience one first hand.

I spent two tours on aircraft carriers and never saw anything as dumb/asinine come from an officers mouth as what I've seen from this story. No matter how you look at it, it's not befitting of a Naval Officer or the leadership officers are supposed to provide. There are better ways of keeping up crew morale on a CVN that's been out to sea for more than 30 days straight. Been there, done that.

I drove past that cross for nearly 15 years while stationed or living in San Diego and it's sad that something iconic for war vets has to come down just because someone doesn't like it. I guess the founding fathers never thought that the freedom of religion would ever be challenged by those that have no religion.

Has this platform even seen an overseas deployment yet? Seems like a waste of money considering the weapons systems in development these days...and what does this platform have over an Arleigh Burke class - savings? Just like the Cyclone..it looks pretty and fast but do we really need a littoral command ship?

Absolutely a very good point! As much as I despise this mans actions and would love to be inline to help kick him back across the border..the security nation could be at stake depending on his job. (But as the link below states, he was in engineering so I doubt the security of the turbines, evaporator or lube oil system could pose much of a national threat). But he could drop secrets as easily as that b@$tard Walker did considering his length of service.

KATU - Portland, OR : Fairview could be U.S.S. Ranger\'s new home | Gresham News

I have two friends that served onboard the Ranger during the early 90's (I served on the Kitty Hawk and the Stennis during my time)...I'm sure, like all sailors, they will be glad to hear that their ship has been spared the ax. Although I find it rather odd that it would be located so far inland considering the biggest warship I know of that has been docked in Portland is the USS Okinawa (helicopter amphib ship) at Swan Island, there's no "real" Naval presence (tho closest we come is the old Kaiser Shipyard in Vancouver which built escort carriers during WWII. My apologies to the reserve center folks) and it is a pretty massive ship..considering the Glen Jackson bridge only has 144ft of vertical clearance during low river levels (summer) - wonder how much they will have to chop off for that. Although I do wish the memorial committee good luck and I'm more than happy to volunteer however I can!!

It's amazing to think that a casual amateur beachcomber ascertained that this heap of sand, gravel and rock was a link to the history of the US and westward expansion of the 19th Century. Both of them should be very proud of their contribution to nautical history. Furthermore, the folks at Texas A&M have done an fantastic job of saving a priceless treasure.

Can't really blame BP, Transocean, Haliburton or the oil industry in providing what the world seems to need these days. Everyone wants oil in some fashion...from those people driving in their gas guzzling SUV, RV's and Mini-vans right down to the fresh teenager who just got their driver's license. Heck I even need it to fuel my Honda Accord. What I don't understand is that NO heads are going to roll because of it. "It's just a way of doing business." We've seen a lot of Navy ship commanders/captains get fired for far much less lately. If leadership starts at the top, the TOP needs to be made a public example of. We've only got this one planet to live on and we are beating her up immensely!
