If your charged with just the crime itself and you have money, you won't see any jail time and get off with a reduced charge of negligent driving 1st degree. If you kill someone, you'll spend the time between the collision and the trial out of jail, enjoying your life, going to work, spending time with your family, while the victims family grieves. When you actually do go to trial, several months later, and are found guilty, you'll only spend 3-5 years in prison, at most. Not sure how you feel about it, but that isn't nearly a long enough sentence for someone that had killed a family member of mine. Things will never change as long as the laws don't change. DUI is still a gross misdemeanor in this state and until it is changed to a felony and people are actually given harsher sentences, the drivers will continue doing what they are doing.
