Daily Camera.com: : Boulder officials, climbers fume over graffiti near top of First Flatiron - Boulder Daily Camera

Yeah, it is a generational problem... Lets not bring up the generation who did/smoked whatever they wanted in the 60's, were handed guaranteed jobs (no free internships) in the 70's, voted Reagan into office in the 80's when yuppie life suited them to protect their nest egg, recently crashed our economy with their greed and are currently laughing their way to the bank swelling the medicare rolls all the while complaining about the "me" generation who have kicked and scraped for what little we have...

Daily Camera.com: : Police: Jewish man assaulted at Boulder bar for refusing to remove yarmulke - Boulder Daily Camera

This is an old philosophical subject. I do think intent should be factored into punishment. Manslaughter being the classic example, which does (and should) carry a lesser sentence than pre-meditated murder. If you agree with the manslaughter example there is no reason you shouldn't be able to reconcile that with this.

Daily Camera.com: : \'Christmas miracle\': Boulder woman, 78, praises police for helping clean graffiti-tagged house - B

This is what I'm talking about. I'm very happy to see such a kind act by the police. This is them investing in the community rather than opposing it. More acts like these (and fewer police crimes) will go a very long way in restoring public trust and relations with the BPD. Good on ya, guys!

I think its easiest to blame the parents. I was a rambunctious college student once, and I had super strict parents who would have been aghast at my behavior. You have a few drinks, you're having a good time, you end up yelling without even realizing it. It is unacceptable and shouldn't be tolerated in residential neighborhoods but I think its a stretch to say they had poor parenting.

Daily Camera.com: : Boulder police detective arrested, accused of interfering with Internet luring sting - Boulder Daily

I've posted on this numerous times, but I'll say it again. we have a problem with BPD. This is a systemic problem in the department. The officers have shown not only poor judgement in an alarming number of cases, but have broken the law over and over again and have little more than a slap on the wrists. I am DISGUSTED with BPD and the lack of accountability. If I were to derelict my duties as routinely and flagrantly as the BPD (eg. Kathleen O'Toole) I would be fired on the spot and never allowed to practice in my field again. It's just an other day at the office for these clowns... Pathetic. Not that the judge cares, but give this guy jail time. When he breaks the law he becomes a criminal, and should be treated as such from here on out. End of story.

Daily Camera.com: : LIVE: Ex-cop Sam Carter\'s sentencing in Boulder\'s Mapleton elk case - Boulder Daily Camera

This is a typical response from authoritarians, law-enforcement, ex-military (some), and many conservatives. There is absolutely an erosion in trusting the police in Boulder, and the rest of the US. If you deny this your head is in the sand. In the past few years we’ve seen from the BPD: a number of DUI’s, elk shooting incident, sale of automatic military rifles, inappropriate stops and calls at 3am, the list goes on. On a national level, I won’t even start. Just because I don’t get my DSL’s on like you every time I get pulled over does not mean I should worry about being wrongfully arrested or beaten by the police. "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”-Benjamin Franklin

Daily Camera.com: : Hundreds of Jeffco students walk out in largest school board protest - Boulder Daily Camera

When I was in HS I remember being annoyed at people of lower socio-econmic status for complaining about their situation, thinking “they should just work harder”. After all, I only had to do a few extra hours of homework a day to make all A’s, and work a weekend/summer job at a shoe store to have as much money as I wanted on top of my allowance. If I could do it so should they, must just be lazy or genetically inferior. It took until halfway through college to see how stupid and naive I was, and to comprehend the full extent of my privilege as upper-middle class, white, and male. I also then realized how much “hard work” really had to do with being lucky enough to be raised by parents who really valued this and education. I look at these high school kids right now, and am completely amazed at their maturity and understanding of how things really work in this world. Good on you young’ins, there may be some hope for this country yet.

Judge Patrick Butler: You actually think anything this guy does in his "community service" will make up for this? Let me remind you: it isn't just the elk. Its the erosion of our trust in the police as a community, especially in a time where police are acting with wanton disregard toward public they are supposed to protect all over this country. Carter typifies what we've come to know from our police force in Boulder and the rest of the US. I am very sorry that you feel jail time, symbolic or otherwise, is wasted. It would go a long way toward salvaging what little trust we have in the police, and justice system for that matter... I am shocked you don't recognize the importance of symbolic acts in volatile times.

So now that we’ve all aired our grievances and seem to be more or less on the same page, what meaningful actions do we take to solve this problem? A DC article comments section is as good a place as any to start a dialogue.

I think most people sympathize. Almost everyone posting here has been very clear in differentiating people who want to help themselves (i’m assuming you are one of these) from the young 20-40 year old professional bums who sit around the creek path and mall consuming resources and harassing pedestrians... I understand you feel defensive, I think thats appropriate. I do, however, wish you would read most of the posts and assess the clear sentiments being expressed rather than rush to a defensive position...

You mean ENT? Sounds a little off. If this guy doesn't have a reputation for this sort of thing I'd be really surprised it went down as the BCH employees said.
