Thank you, Toast and Toasties. You have educated me and inspired me to be a kinder person and a more thoughtful parent to a small she-witch, and to imagine and live my best life.

That is the only episode of Modern Family that I've ever seen.

This JUST happened to me. Had strep throat, they gave me amoxicillin, and on Day 3, I had a rash EVERYWHERE, including on my face. OMG, the itching. The resident I saw on day 1 of the rash "prescribed" Zyrtec and a tiny tube of topical cream. I would have had to bathe in the topical for it to have any effect at all. I let three more days go by, at which point the 10 people who came to my house for the first night of Passover all looked at me and said "Um, you need to go to the hospital." So one of them drove me there (after dinner. I mean, I made chocolate mousse from scratch.) And then I spent a Friday night in the ER during a full moon. All the stories you have ever heard about an ER during a full moon are true. Then 2 weeks on a Prednisone/Benadryl cocktail in a Valley of the Dolls kind of haze. Diagnosed as an amoxicillin allergy -- apparently developed as an adult bc I had strep throat/penicillin all the time as a kid.

I have just recently embraced the fact that I actually am managing a team of people (I'm a lawyer, and we are generally lone wolves), and have found myself trying to flavor the full-on commands with a bit of humor. The e-mail I sent this morning regarding a deadline said "Drop dead is Friday the 13th, but Wednesday the 11th would be even better . . ."

So I am an Old (44) straight female with a 9year old kid. I have happily not really dated since she was 5-ish (I have an "I see him at a conference twice-a-year" hookup guy.) I think I am ready to stick my toe back in the water. While I'm not looking for leading-to-marriage-or-living-together kind of thing, I am looking for something slightly more in depth than hooking up. (Like, my ideal would be to see someone one or two nights during the week and on the weekends, but also to have my alone time -- does that exist in reality?) Also, I am thinking that it would be nice to date an actual grown-up, rather than a man-child, which aptly describes my most serious exes (and is totally my own fault, I have had terrible taste/instincts).

But - I don't even know where to start on the whole dating thing. Last time I tried online dating it was maybe 2008, and mostly I learned that online profiles appear to be creative writing exercises?

I am a little nervous. Any advice would be welcome.

Due to family history, I am sometimes required to say "Turkish soldier." Just, no.
