right. the notactivated custom firmware won't update my baseband right? so technically i can just restore my iphone with the notactivated 3.1.2 firmware and use my legit carrier and then unlock my iphone whenever i want to and use sim cards from other companies. am i right?

ok... well ultimately, the problem i am having is that i use a legitimate iphone contract right now. BUT i might use sim cards from other phone companies time to time so i need my iphone to be able to unlock in the future. that's why i'm not sure what to do... what should i do? thanks for the help btw.

i see but would i have to use ultrasn0w to use my legitimate iphone contract if i choose to restore my phone with a activated 3.1.2 firmware? also if i choose to restore my phone with a non activated 3.1.2 firmware, would i be able to unlock my phone in the future?

i currently am using an iphone 3gs on an official carrier (t-mobile netherlands) but i want the unlock option to be available just in case something happens in the near future. that means i should download the activated firmware but would that affect my use of the official carrier now? what should i do? and this was asked earlier but not answered: Is there any disadvantage to running ultrasn0w while on AT&T with a legitimate contract? If not, maybe I'll just leave it as is until the next round of firmware updates come around.
