Yes. Believe me, I am not a fan of NCLB!! A friend of mine was just telling me about a friend who was fresh out of college and had just gotten a teaching job. She was so excited, and got her room all set up, and couldn't wait to start. Just a couple of weeks in, she is discouraged and ready to quit because she realized she really couldn't do any of the things she actually *wanted* to do with the students because of the need to "teach to the test." Very, very sad... for students and teachers both.

Agreed. I also think that debt is like anything else that separates from God, in that if we recognize it and make continual steps to change it, that God is no longer angry, but forgiving and happy that we are making better choices. I can't go back in time and not accrue the debt, and I can't make it magically disappear, but I CAN learn from it and pay it off and make the daily decision to do better.

Great points! Buying real, whole food is a priority for me as well, and I am very thankful for our local health food store that has great prices (because I'm even weirder about Whole Foods than I am about Starbucks. ;-))

<<I also find myself getting ANGRY (irrationally) at them when someone invites me/us to do something socially that costs money!!!>> I am SO glad you said this, because I struggle with that exact thing as well! Really, my money issues are numerous. I hate that I do it, and am forever asking myself "What is WRONG with me?" It is just such a frustrating thing to be in debt, and there are times that I feel it's taken over my head and my life. :( I know all I can do is take it one day at a time, be thankful for all that we have, and not worry about what anyone else is doing.

<<I have seen too many hard working families lose everything right now, not so much because they were irresponsible with their money, but because life happens. It is unfortunate, troubling, and sad. >> Absolutely. We have been on the receiving end of that "life happens" ourselves, most recently a few years ago when we lost a huge chunk of salary due to furloughs to avoid a lay-off. I try not to make assumptions because I know that I don't know everyone's individual circumstances. What is hard for me is when it is NOT because of unfortunate circumstances, but poor choices. I'm working on it. :)

Interesting perspective. There is probably an element of envy on my part as well. As well as frustration and regret and self-flagallation for getting into debt in the first place. Lots of feelings to work through, for sure. :-/

I think we've talked before about your not wearing a watch, and I am so in awe of that! I start to get all twitchy if I'm without a watch for even an hour. I check it constantly out of habit. I think I might need to do a watch-detox as an experiment!!

<<Whenever my 3yo asks one of those "tough" questions, I first pause to consciously identify my own preconceived notions and any stigmas I've attached to the subject (usually the ones that were created for my because of our culture and the answers to my childhood questioning!), then I try to erase all of that for a moment to offer him a simple, straightforward answer. >> I love this! Thank you!

http://unschoolingchronicles.blogspot.com/ : Questions

Absolutely! I was not allowed to ask questions about different religions, etc growing up. It was as if they were afraid that just by my knowing more about something, that that is the path I would choose, and they didn't want that. I want my kids to be able to ask ANY question, and get as much information as they would like.... and if I don't know the answers, then we will learn together. I explain that different people believe different things, and that that is their right and their choice.

http://unschoolingchronicles.blogspot.com/ : Won\'t they just eat junk food all day?

You have NOT failed as a parent. You were following the advice of your doctor. When my youngest was a baby, his ped said the same kinds of things to us.... feed him icecream, butter, french fries, etc etc, anything to put weight on him because he was falling off the chart. It never occurred to me at the time to question any of it, because I didn't question anything. He was completely healthy (still is), just very thin! He's still extremely thin at 14, and he eats everything in sight. :) It's just his body type. I missed how old your son is, but it's never too late to do things differently, if that's what you choose to do... with, of course, his health being your biggest deciding factor. Good luck to you!

I get overwhelmed easily, which is where schedules and checklists tend to help me. I know that if I worked out of the home, I would absolutely need to do something similar to what you've described here, just to keep my sanity!! It sounds like you have figured out how to make it all work for you (except for the part where you're reading my blog when you're supposed to be doing homework. ;)) lol
