Feld Thoughts : Glue Conference Invites New Startups To Apply To Participate For Free

The Glue 2011 content should be up soon - I know Eric is focused on Defrag and expect the Glue site to be updated for 2011 shortly after. In the mean time, the link to apply for the Alcatel-Lucent Demo Pavilion at Glue is live.

Feld Thoughts : Two Last Things On Assumption of Stock Options

If there are no preferred shares, then I have no idea why the options would be priced at a discount to the share price.

In a private company, if there is preferred stock that is owned by investors, there is an opportunity (and a goal) by the company to price the common stock lower than the preferred stock (since the preferred stock has rights that the common stock doesn't have.) As a result, the options (which are almost always for common stock) get priced lower than the preferred stock. The amount of the discount varies widely by the stage / state of the company.

Feld Thoughts : How To Create a Sustainable Entrepreneurial Community

Government statistics on this stuff lag dramatically so I don't think any of them will be useful. All you need to do is travel around the US and talk to people - the number of new tech startups throughout the US is staggering.

Yes, although I'm not sure training associates necessarily does this. There's a long path from associate to partner in most VC contexts and many of the folks that work for other firms as associates end back up in the entrepreneurial pool as their next step on their career path. That said, it would be great to have more awesome VCs in Boulder, although we've got numerous ones participating that are not Boulder-based these days and they've been hugely impactful on the local tech scene.

We feel very comfortable that we can handle funding six to eight new companies a year among the four of us. At some point we'll reach a capacity, but we are no where near it right now.

Feld Thoughts : Deeply Held Beliefs

This massively eliminates work. Since we have to do all of the work, we triage all the busy work, logistics, and other low value things. It's fascinating when you have to do a particular "thing" that you view as low value - if you don't have anyone to hand it off to, you often realize it's not worth the time and eliminate from the work flow or routine. We have a lot of examples of this.

It's where we ended up on the first fund. We went out to raise $175m and ended up with a lot more demand. Our larger LPs helped us determine where we ended up and $225m was the number. If one of us left, I expect we would shrink to three - I can't imagine ever adding someone new to the team.
