Jake diets. Jake does not overeat. Jake exercises as much as he can. It doesn't work. He has a problem that he was born with and he's struggled with it all his life.

The figure quoted takes in the pre and post surgery stuff, as well as an expansion of the effort toward helping others who need it. If you go to the website you'll see that they're setting up a foundation for people who have the same problem.

No. Losing 50 pounds is not at all like losing 425. It's one of those things that looks on the surface to be an easy, common sense kind of thing, but it's not. For someone who is morbidly obese there are a great many complications to losing weight. Some have been mentioned in other parts of this discussion. You may not have noticed that. You seem interested, maybe you should talk to a doctor who specializes in severe weight issues.

He does not over eat. He does not gorge on fatty foods and candy. He's not a binge eater. For more details please ask Jake.

1) Yes. Sorry. Some of the other posts were starting to get me a bit short on patience. 2) Again yes, but in this case the genetics are the direct cause. The surgery will give Jake a new tool that will allow him to lose the weight and thus regain the ability to exercise and become healthy.

I dare to call it what it is - a problem caused by genetics and not a problem caused by laziness or any other moral issue. So you're right. It's not at all like cancer, the vast majority of which are caused by smoking, and other poor lifestyle choices (including eating meat). No, Jake's weight problem is caused by genetics, so it would be better to compare it to a condition such as cystic fibrosis.

You seem to want a great deal more info. That's a good thing, and I'm happy for it. However, in the interest of accuracy, I'm going to defer to Jake now. Go to the website. There is a great deal more information there.

Yes, because 50 pounds is equal in every way to 425 pounds. OK dropping the sass here. Fifty pounds is an accomplishment, no doubt about it. But it's got nothing in common with loosing more than a hundred pounds. And four hundred pounds? It's a whole other ball game. That's the thing folks don't understand. At fifty pounds overweight a person's definitely out of shape. But all options are open to them. At around a hundred pounds overweight things start to change, but with determination and time a person can lose the weight, and later the skin flaps. At 400+ pounds overweight exercise is no longer an option, since the risk of injury and even death is too great. This surgery Jake needs is at the recommendation of his Dr. It really is the one and only option left to save Jake's life.

Jake can't exercise. It's very dangerous for him to even walk, let alone any form of more strenuous exercise. And he does eat less. He does eat a normal, healthy diet. What he has is a metabolism issue, and without the surgery he will die. It's not as if Jake and his friends just decided out of the blue to go begging for handouts. Everything else has been tried. The surgery is the recommendation of Jake's Dr. Yes, Jake is delightful, but he's also someone who does his homework, and he does it thoroughly.

Jake doesn't have a lazy bone in his body. He doesn't over eat. He has tried to exercise, but it's dangerous for him to walk across the room right now. Please, it's not about choices for Jake, it's about genetics. He needs the surgery to survive - nothing else has worked.

1) He's on a scholarship so the cost of the school is a moot point. 2) He has tried everything. This is not about choices it's about genetics. That's the thing Jake never had a chance on.
