Race Relations Project : South Park...off the hook?

Did they actually threaten to kill them or something? If so, I think that's pretty funny. People need to calm down because it’s just a joke and more than one God was mocked. However, the Muslims probably do not understand the comedy of it because they are of a different culture and that's understandable. Once again, it was probably radical Muslims that did this and they make everyone else look bad. We only judge people by those who we think represent them. I’m sure Muslims or anyone else judges us by listening to the ridiculous things Sarah Palin said like talking about religion and war in the same sentence.

Race Relations Project : What about health care?

Okay, I just want to make something clear for people, because American citizen, seem to be very confused about this whole illegal immigrant and citizen thing. Most people whom I meet are appalled when I tell them that I'm not a citizen. There are three different statuses one can have. You can be an illegal immigrant, a resident, or a citizen. An illegal immigrant is one who is undocumented and not on the books, we do not have record of these people living among us. A resident is one who has migrated from another country, is documented, pays taxes, but just doesn't want to be claimed by the U.S. because either they want to continue honoring their country or it's not in their interest. Third of all, you can be a U.S. citizen, one who pays taxes, is looked for in foreign countries if some kind of disaster happens and was born on U.S soil or went through the naturalization process. It really ticks me off when people assume I'm illegal because I'm not a citizen, it's not an if this than that situation so do research and be more informed of your own government policies. And I believe all those who are documented in the U.S. should benefit from the Health Care Reform because we are all paying an equal price for it. Those who are not documented should be given residency which is not citizenship. That way these people can help pay for the Health Care Reform and contribute to the U.S. economy more effectively. People may think that people choose to stay illegal to avoid paying taxes but most of the people I've met are not documented because the government denies them the right and because they don't have the money because they are paid minimum wage by companies who exploit them.

Race Relations Project : Isn't migration conflict inevitable?

One more thing, they're not illegal, they're going back to what was taken from them. For example, California, Texas and all the other ones that were mentioned in class. If we didn't take they're land, there wouldn't be illegal Mexicans coming into the U.S.

Wow your comment was imbecilic. No offense. So you’re saying we should just step all over whomever it takes to get to the top? On top of that we should just continue to oppress them? "The Native Americans surely tried to tell us not to come in illegally"? Oh yeah, because that term existed back then. If you don’t know your history, the Native Americans were friendly to the Pilgrims. They fed them and taught them their ways of survival in the Americas. Then the illegal immigrants turned their back on them and took over their land. Life isn't fair? If you lived in the U.S. for say eighteen years, illegally, and had your wife, your kids, friends, and family here and you were deported back to your native country, would you just sit at the airport handcuffed to the other illegal immigrant by hand and foot and just say "Life isn't fair, oh well"?NO! You wouldn't. So for you to make this claim is just ridiculous. The situations are very much the same. If Russia set foot on the U.S. today and said we want to claim your country ours and you can’t live here anymore would it be okay because it happens all the time? What if Russia, England, and France decide that they want to come to America for a better life and start a war against us? There’s no way you can say that the U.S. is too strong and would still defeat them. How do you know the U.S. would win the war? The U.S. has not won a war starting with the Vietnam War. The U.S. gained independence from England ,which was the superpower back then, so that proves that even a small "colony" per say could be capable of winning a war against a great superpower. If the United States didn’t exploit other countries and didn’t keep them poor and make it impossible for people to live there, people wouldn’t migrate here. The people that come here are poor and it costs over three-hundred dollars to get a Visa to come to the U.S. legally. When you’re living on two to five dollars a day, it’s impossible to even dream about coming here legally. And how can you just sit there with a grumbling stomach as you watch your child starve to death. From your tone, it sounds like you’re proud that your forefathers committed genocide in order for you to be standing where you are today. I think it is unfair and that we should at least have some compassion for the people who are trying to make a better life for their family and for themselves. We shouldn’t think “Oh life is not fair,” instead we should try to make a difference somehow. You cannot even begin to understand what an illegal immigrant suffers on their journey here and while living here. The American “empire” is strong but no empire exists forever. Take a look at the Roman Empire, a great fleet of soldiers and a huge conquered range of land and yet, the still fell. One day, all of the oppressed countries and probably the rest of the world is going to get tired of being “pushed around” and the American Empire will fall too.

Race Relations Project : Nothing About the Census is Easy

Okay. So honestly, I found the Census form extremely confusing. I also found it offensive that Hispanics were singled out and put in a box by ourselves. The first question asked if I was Hispanic, Puerto Rican, Mexican, Cuban or Other and if so to specify which type. At first when i saw the Hispanic box, I was like okay, check this box, but then it also said "this is not a race, please answer the next question as well." So I go to the next question and my choices are White, Black/African American/Negro, and American Indian or Alaskan India ( specify which tribe ) or other. I cannot choose any of the choices because first off, I'm not white, not black and not NATIVE AMERICAN...I'm of Spanish decent which is European which I guess would be considered white, then I'm also Indian (Inca) but the native Indian people of Ecuador migrated from China and the Asian continent, so what am i supposed to answer if it says "choose one." I'll admit, I was somewhat uncomfortable and had a hard time deciding what to choose and so I asked one of my floor mates, whose Colombian what she put down and she answered "Hispanic and for race I put down Colombian," so that didn't help. Then one of my other floor mates asked me what I had put down because she wasn't sure what she should put down. It was so stupid, I think. In the end, I chose the other box and put down Mestizo as my race. However, I am not sure if everyone is familiar with the term, it means half Indian and half Spanish. So not only was the Census form confusing but it was also offensive. I felt singled out when I saw the box that asked if I was Hispanic. I felt like the government is watching me and my people and trying to see how many of us are in the country and I honestly felt like they'd use the information to "control" the Hispanic population. I've noticed this singling out of Hispanics on many other forms though. On recent work applications, on surveys, on whatever form asks one about their race, the box that asks if one is Hispanic is present. I really don't like it and I wondered why it is? Why don't they have something similar for the Whites or Blacks or Asians? I thought about it some more and I guess it may be because the highest number of immigrants in the U.S. right now is of Hispanic or Latino origin. However, I think, the census should do it based on what country the people are coming from because race is just too confusing, and Hispanics have so many different things they could be. We can’t all just be one type or race.

Race Relations Project : The tyranny of radical Muslims...

I can understand why you husband "dies a little" when he sees how Muslim culture is portrayed through the media. These discussions just lead back to "don't judge a book by it's cover." The cover would be all the idiots that represent us in a bad way. That's what people do, they judge before they meet and so that is why there are so many misunderstandings and in the big world, they lead to war. War can be prevented if people talk but I saw a documentary about war and it talked about how the U.S gets an economy booster after every war and I feel like that may be why we're at war and I'm sure it's for oil as well.

Race Relations Project : Christian Invaders - the turnaround

I really liked this lecture. I was really able to see the war in Iraq from the Muslim perspective. And now I feel like I really do understand why they are fighting back. I think about it and if I was in their place, cold, poor, and hungry, I too would fight for my country, for my family and for future generations. I feel like after this lecture, we can understand what being a suicide bomber really means. I also feel that religion is always going to be the cause of a war; it has been for a while now and will continue to be.

Race Relations Project : What about the women issue?

Affirmative action was implemented to help all those minority groups, either by race, gender, or ethnicity to have opportunities that weren’t available to them. So no, it doesn’t change my mind about it and doesn’t surprise me. Women make less money than men do even when they have the same amount of experience. It’s because of affirmative action that now women outnumber men in universities. More women are part of government, and head of companies. White women also make up the greatest portion of the population so by just that it should seem dumb to think that they aren’t the main beneficiaries of affirmative action.

Race Relations Project : This is totally off the hook

Well… games like that are ridiculous, but sex culture in Japan is different. There are posters all over Japan that feature sexual content. Yet there is no national sex education program in Japan. I don’t think the government can do much in preventing the creation of that type of game, just limit who they can be sold to. I can’t understand how the premise of the game came to the creator’s mind though… most games are used to create a form of escape into something “cooler” or whatever, but I can’t see the reason for wanting to go into a world like the one in the rape games. Besides the creator, what kind of person wants to play such games? It’s really a disturbing thought.

Race Relations Project : Native Hawaiians. Ever think of them?

Native Hawaiians do deserve to be treated as the other native peoples of the Americas. But even then, I think more should be done fore theses people considering even when Native American tribes have the rights to self government and they still cannot prosper in life, mainly because they are oppressed by the U.S government. I think these people are put in a corner because the government doesn't want the citizens of the U.S to see how badly these people are treated. I think that if people did see this, they would actrually try to help somehow and this would cause a revolt on the U. S government.

Race Relations Project : What's the big deal with periods?

I personally did feel uncomfortable when Sam said "BLEEDING" because I could picture it. However, if menstrual cycle is said then I picture an actual graph of a menstrual cycle that you seen in a textbook. Society has probably trained women to feel this way in favor of men. Think about it, it’s always been a man’s world, as Sam said. Never have we had a female president and I don’t think we will for a long time, though Hilary Clinton was pretty close to getting there. I think this goes way back to when women did not have equal rights. They were silenced and did not have an opinion and so they probably never complained about having their period and how it hurts and all that comes with it. We don’t talk about sex in an open way. We don’t discuss how much it hurts the first time, or the ejaculation of men, nor do we talk about how it sucks sometimes. We don’t talk about excretion openly either, yet these are all natural functions of the body. No one wants to hear these things, we know it happens but there’s’ no need to discuss it. If we don’t discuss bodily functions such as those than we shouldn’t discuss “bleeding.” I think if we want society to speak more openly about menstruation, it should be taught in school at the age that puberty begins to both boys and girls. This will make the boys comfortable with the idea and they won’t be so grossed out when the idea comes across. I remember in high school, we only discussed menstruation for one day for 5 minutes and all the boys started laughing. At this point the teacher should have taken a stand and pointed out that it is no laughing matter. Because the boys laughed, it made me think that it was weird and that it was embarrassing. At home, it’s the same way. I onced told may parents that I was in a bad mood because I have my period out loud in the car and my mom just glared at me and my dad was like “what the hell? My mom called me a “sonsa” which goes along the line or dumbass and told me that I shouldn’t say this out loud and my dad said “I don’t need to know that.” This was just when I went home for Spring Break. So it’s not that women choose to be embarrassed by their menstruation, it’s that we’re taught to be from a young age and as children we only know what we are given.

No, I don't think this is just a few bad apples. I think it's all about race, not health care. If you look at the pictures from the article, you can see the signs that call Obama an "undocumented worker" and every single one portrays him as brown. I mean he is brown, but why isn't there a black and white poster that doesn't show color. Everyone that is protesting in these pictures is white. It is less likely that these people are the wealthy type, because they have time to protest. They're probably minimum wage and minimum benefits workers who don't know the meaning of Universal Health Care. I think people are scared of change in general. Whether it be giving equal rights to black people or health care reform.

Race Relations Project : Does this rudeness thing cut both ways?

I think it is double standard when black people get so offended people text "rude" remarks about them during class. How do you know it's a white person, it could be a black person just kidding around too. I don't see why it's okay for black people to make fun of white people and not vise versa. People should just get over these “racial” slurs and stuff, I don’t think they need to be said nor should people feel offended by them. I understand that throughout history people of color have been oppressed and still are today but we should just try to move on. If black people make it okay for them to make fun of white people and not okay for white people to make fun of black people that is simply not giving white people equal treatment. I really don’t know what can be said to offend a white person, at least about race, but they should not do it to people of color. I’m Hispanic and I’ve been called a Spic before, by black and Hispanic people but I have never really taken offense to it because I don’t even know what it’s supposed to mean. However I recently was told the meaning of it and it kind of did upset me but I still will not fight back if such occurs again. I think that if you let others see that their words “hurt” you then you are letting them control you and so people should just not take offense to these words. However if these people are legit KKK members or Nazis or whatever then attention should be given to the situation. I also noticed that lately there has developed “racism” or prejudice against Latinos. I think this is because everyone is scared of the economic situation in the country so they find people to blame it on. The same way the Germans blamed the Jews and set out to destroy them. It’s mostly the government’s fault for racism I think. They put out all these stupid “movements” to save our country and crap but they are not helping, instead they are dividing its people You didn’t hear of beatings or murders due to racist reasons before, even when there was a heavy flow of Hispanic immigrants to the country but since the “war on illegal immigration” started it has escalated So I think that the reason people are racist against each other is not because they are racist, but because they are scared and they want to find some way to solve their problems and get back to where they were. But either way white people should not make fun of black people intentionally and vice versa.

Race Relations Project : What happens to multiracial people?

See, this is where "races" become a problem. When multiracial people cannot identify with either or because either he or she is too light to be a person of color or too dark to be a white person. I think the grouping should be done by how the original colonists migrated to the Americas, when we speak of "race" in Sociology. So white would not be white it would be European instead, that include the Spanish because those are the people that conquered to original natives of the Americas. The indigenous people would be the actually "AMERICAN" people or could be called new world people. Black people could be considered "of African Descent"...I think it should all depend on where your roots are.

Yeah she played football in high school but I think her team will be embarrassed to have a woman as their football coach and this may affect their performance on the field. I am surprised that no parent has commented on this yet or pulled their kid off the team. I do think she has the right to be the coach, but I don't think the football fans/ society will agree with this. Is she the first female football coach or the first black female football coach?

Race Relations Project : Men and Women. Hmm...Are We Really This Different?

I think it is ridiculous that sex toys worth thousands of dollars have to be produced. I understand that there are those “shy” men that have difficulties interacting with women but I think they should practice their social skills instead of “dating” a Roxxxy. Also, it’s totally and completely weird that someone would own one of these. It’s unnatural and it shouldn’t be done. Also, the men run the risk of falling in love with the doll because they would become intimate with it through sex. This could cause a mental problem in men and lead to disastrous consequences. However, I can see why Roxxxy would be a success in the market. If men don’t have girlfriends or wives then they have to resort to prostitutes which are very dangerous. Prostitutes can carry all types of diseases that are just not worth getting fro one night of pleasure. So this is where the doll comes in. She can perform the same types of tasks but she does not have these life-threatening diseases. I see that people think that this doll may lead to more rapes and such but I think it may be the opposite. Because the sex offenders will have a realistic doll to play with and to release sexual pleasure with, it may keep them from having to find victims to pursue. Why would they need to sexually abuse someone when they can have sex with this doll that is willing to do it with them? Another thing about this doll is that it can hold conversation with humans. The artificial intelligence is cool but it is creepy. We are going as far as producing a doll that looks feels and speaks like us but where will it stop? If you’ve seen iRobot then you know what the world may become or even Surrogates. I know these are fiction but it seems like we keep walking towards that specific aspect of the future. Robots can “think” for themselves because of their software that is programmed by a computer scientist or engineer but what happens when someone programs it or taps into the system to program it to do other tasks than what is expected of these dolls. It is scary thinking about how the humans are not capable of interacting with each other and need an artificial object to make a connection with instead. I feel like technology continues to draw us away from one another little by little. Take a look at the iPod. People don’t spark up random conversation while on a bus ride or at a park anymore because they always are doing something else. Whether it’s texting on your cell phone or listening to your iPod, you make yourself less approachable. I feel like this doll will do the same for society.

Race Relations Project : Why Is This Racist? Really...

So is he saying that he's bringing "nostalgia type" of times of not having black people integrated with white people. Lewis says that this league would make people think "This was fun like I remember" as if basketball was fun in the past only because there were white people in it. This is blatantly racist. Why do they have to be WHITE and U.S. born citizens. Is he trying to represent America some how? Because if he is, an ALL white league of natural born citizens does not represent America at all. I think the purpose more over of this is to separate the people that can jump and the people that can't. The NBA has become predominantly Black. So I feel like he wants a place where more white people get a chance to play "professional" basketball. Either way, it's racist.

Race Relations Project : Fired for a Scarf

I shopped at Abercrombie and Hollister for most of my high school years. However, I never felt like I was discriminated against as a customer. I have noticed that the employees that are on the floor are predominantly white though. I have seen a Black girl and a brown guy in their stores. I think it depends on where the store is located for there to be diversity or for the lack of it. Now that I see this video, I think it is really wrong for corporate to have fired her for her scarf. Then again, Abercrombie does have their “look” policy so it makes sense that they would not do that. I think it would have been a different story if the girl did not wear that scarf. Even if she was Muslim, she could have been hired.

Race Relations Project : Native Americans: Question Two

I understand that you do not feel any remorse for the Native Americans but I don’t agree with any of the points you make. The Native Americans don’t feel like it’s the government’s responsibility to look after them. It’ something that should be done because they too are AMERCIAN citizens, just like you and your ancestors were. Logically, the government has to protect and serve its people, even the people that are not European/White. Do you really think that only because the Europeans migrated to the Americas that we have advanced in technology? Be reasonable, obviously the Native Americans would not be living in huts. It seems like you think they were savages as they are stereotypically seen, but they had their own civilizations in place. Just because their customs are different than that of the European society does not mean that they are any less than yours. How can they live in a hut today? What are they going to hunt if they do go back to their old ways? All the land is being misused and destroyed. You can say that Europeans made it possible to go to school and live in homes but what you consider a home may different than what someone else considers a home. You say that they have the option of “modernizing” themselves and to fit into the “European” way of life but did your ancestors do that when they were fresh off the boat? It was obviously easier for them to integrate into society because they are White. What is modern anyway? Having a television, an iPod, going the movies, driving a car? What if you can’t afford any of these things? The Native Americans are still oppressed and being treated unfairly. You must have missed Sam’s lecture on the different household incomes and the studies that were done to see who receives the better opportunities. If society does not want to give anything back to the Native Americans, they should at least be respected and treated equally as the White people. That goes for all races. The Europeans did introduce new ideas and technology but that does not mean they “helped” the Native Americans. If it had helped they’d be on the same level of wealth and well-being as the White people in America. Imagine yourself in their place. You go to school in the poorest neighborhood, you live in the poorest neighborhood, you can’t get a job (not because you’re not qualified but because the employer would rather someone of a different race), and you live with the constant remind that there are only a few of your people left in this world. Then think about what it feels like to look out into the world and see how wealthily the White people are living, the opportunities they receive, and how you should be in their position. Imagine what it feels like for an adolescent to look at someone living only a few miles away and seeing them with their Dooney and Bourke bag, their Chanel sunglasses, and their convertible while they can barely afford a bite to eat. Then you’ll see how unfair this world really is. I don’t get how you can believe that with “hard work” a Native American can “make it.” Do you not understand that even with all the qualifications in the world, there is still discrimination? No, our generation should not be held accountable for the genocide of the Native Americans that happened four-hundred years ago but we should at least try to understand the position these people are in and try to help somehow. I moved to the United States when I was four so I am a new immigrant as well like the guy in the video. However the reason why I don’t feel like I should be blamed for the genocide is that my ancestors suffered the same way the Native Americans. My original ancestors are the indigenous people of South America. The Spanish, like the Europeans felt the need to go to the South American continent and conquer the people already living there.

Race Relations Project : Native Americans: Question One

I don’t think the government or school system will allow for the genocide of the Native Americans to be taught in schools. In school, we learn that they were here before us but we are only told that they died from diseases. We are never really told that there was a genocide that almost completely wiped out the entire Native American population. If we are told about how the Native Americans were transported over to reservations in handcuffs and on foot, it is only a brief sentence or two in a textbook. The government would not allow for it to be taught as a genocide that was committed so we could benefit from the “newfound land” because in doing so they’d be admitting that the United States of America is not the great country it’s perceived to be. Also, the American citizens may want to help the Native Americans once they understand how unfairly they are being treated and this may cause a revolution which is not something the government wants.
