I agree with a previous poster who mentioned about public employees 'serving our country'. Our military men and women served our country and their benefits should be tailored to their situation. The same benefits originally reserved to firefighters and law enforcement should also be tailored to their situation but the 'twenty and done' benefits should be altered if the retiree embarks on another public career or another job. The taxpayer should not be on the hook for health benefits if the retiree is working on another career. Also the severance benefits should be based on the salary/overtime average of the last five years and not the last one year. Other public employees in administrative positions should not have the same benefits as the firefighters and police which is the reason the tax burden increased. Why should an IT worker, accountant and janitor in the public sector get the full benefits with minimal contribution in a 'business' which produces no products? In fact, the only place IT workers have a union is in the public sector while IT has rejected unions in the private sector since its infancy in the 60s. Unions are a progressive ideal borne from socialism and Marxism. Similar to affirmative action, they lower the bar of achievement by setting wages, bonuses, staffing and quality quotas which stifle individual achievement and progress. One example is the use of robotic manufacturing machinery which were first implemented in foreign automobile factories because the unions blocked their installations here in the US. The same happened with implementing Peter Drucker's organizational techniques after WWII. The teacher unions have been running the same interference to improve our public schools since the 60s. The only exception is in New Orleans where officials had no choice because Katrina wiped out the entire public school system and the union's power.
