MoneySense : About that mortgage ...

Taking my advice I see... good for you. However, I don't think I said to put as much money as you can on the principal. In fact, I would consider doing the opposite. Is paying down the principal such a smart thing to do considering how low mortgage rates are right now? (Anyone care to weigh in?) I might put that money in equities — returns will be higher than a 2% or so variable rate that you're trying avoid. Grow that money and put it on the mortgage when rates rise. Of course, it's always great to have no mortgage, but for thejavascript:%20postComment(0); amount houses are going for these days, most people won't be able to pay off their house in a hurry.

Hi Gail, I was talking more generally — most of the bottom ten cities have a high crime rates, but you're right, Bay Roberts has a low crime rate compared to most of the other cities on the list. It ranks 39 out of 179 for overall crime. So, it may have other issues, but crime isn't one of them.

MoneySense : The real price of the iPad

Hi Liorah, Thanks for the comment. If you don't mind, can you tell me which products I incorrectly priced? I got all of the costs off either Apple's website or another site (if it wasn't an Apple product I was referring to.) If there's something wrong, or a price has changed since I wrote this, I will correct it. As for the Wall Street Journal, you got the same information as me. In the article I wrote that it'll cost $104 a year to access the online site, which is $1.99 per week, exactly what you wrote below. It's also been reported that the iPad version of the WSJ will cost $17.99 a month, or $215.88. That's actually more than the cost for media I put in the article. I will double check on the cost for Apple Care for an iPad, but I know on my MacBook it was about $250. It's true that there are many computers that are more expensive; all I'm saying is that the costs add up. If you're concerned about your bottom line, this device will cost more than advertised price, since there's a variety of add-ons that you may need to use this. Of course, you can buy the cheapest iPad, not purchase any magazines and stick to free apps and your costs will be lower.

I should clarify, the WSJ didn't officially announce this though a story in the Journal mentioned that a "person familiar with the matter" says that will be cost it will charge iPad subscribers.

Interesting timing for your comment Jack. It looks like papers are setting up to charge about the same prices for the iPad as they do for the newsstand. The WSJ announced yesterday that it would charge $17.99 a month for its iPad content — that works out to $215.88 a year (US), more than hundred dollars than what I quoted in the post. And, while you say you want to continue getting free content, the point is that content will no longer be available for nothing. At least that's what publishers want. I'm not sure if readers will pay that much to read the WSJ, or whatever you read Jack (Globe? Post?), but clearly, if the iPad takes off your free sources will start costing money.

That is a very interesting request, one I've never thought about. You can't do that from our site, but I'll see if it's something we can implement at some point. For now you'll just have to come back here or add me to your RSS feed. Thanks Igor.
