Big Hollywood : In Memoriam: Andrew Breitbart (1969-2012)

Quite possible...knew a 44 YO man, perfect (apparent) health, who sat down to breakfast with his wife and dropped over, no warning, from an aortal aneurysm. You never can know.... Thank you, Mr. Breitbart. You didn't have as much time as you would have wished-but my goodness, what you did with it! R.I.P.

Big Hollywood : Ben Kingsley Nails the Modern Movie Malaise

I can't feel any love for DKR yet. The trailers just don't catch my interest, and Selena's monologue to Bruce about being the Evil Greedy 1%er left me thinking, "uhm...so taking down the guy who employs thousands upon thousands, is hip-deep in philanthropic causes and who gives away more in a year than you'll steal in a lifetime is supposed to be a _good_ idea?" I am so ready for Avengers, though. And the extra bits in the German trailer were sweet.

Big Hollywood : Last Night on 'Glee': The People Want Pixie Sticks, and Why Girls Shouldn't Give it Up to Bad Boys

^This. She watches it so the rest of us can be warned about the junk being fed our teen and tween loved ones (and their friends). I don't watch it, don't ever want to watch it- but I also know young people in that age group, and want to keep up on what Hollyweird tells them is the Cool Thing To Do. Plus, watching the trolls attempt to be hard-hitting and clever *is* amusing....

Big Hollywood : Parents Need To Stop Blaming Hollywood and Take Responsibility

This. Hollywood has learned that it can keep shoveling crap and that the public will keep buying it, will keep allowing it into their homes. And there are so many parents who will simply drop their kids in front of the TV and let it keep them busy for the day. I have no doubt that Spongebob and similar frenetic offerings *are* bad for kids' attention spans- and it's up to us, the consumers, to stop finding this acceptable. When we turn off the junk, H'wood will start feeling the pain in its collective pocketbooks. (Seriously, I've watched Spongebob. My brain was whimpering and cowering after about two minutes....)

Big Hollywood : Zoe Saldana: Racists Enjoy Seeing America Struggle

Voting for someone because she believes in them, not just for their image, is a good start. Even if what they're saying is wrong, there is at least some thinking and judgment going on. Still a long ways to go, but she's young and has probably been steeped in H'wood liberalism for much of her adult life. Bonnie's right-there are probably a lot of young liberals who might have their eyes opened, if they spent some time discussing life with a conservative who is good at expressing what we _really_ believe and act upon. (And let's be honest- she is, to some extent, right. Guardian Liberals and their US brethren loathe the US for everything she is, calling her racist for anything that *doesn't* smack down white people-and loathe themselves for their own, oh-so-not-PC whiteness.)

Big Hollywood : Review: Let’s Hear It for ‘Captain America’

We saw it last night (also not in 3D) and enjoyed it. Evans actually has some nice, wordless moments that say a lot more than more lines of dialogue could have, and handles well a character whose dream is achieved partly by the risk of the SuperSoldier program, but partly when he takes things into his own hands and chooses to become more than a flashy symbol. And the leads played well off each other-I'm not familiar enough with Stanley Tucci to judge his role here against any others he has had, but his character played well off Evans'. I could go on for a ways here, but in short- no, no sucker punches. Captain America is still a guy willing to risk his life for his country, who inspires others to follow him.(Comics fans will be amused to catch a certain group of commandos, never mentioned by name, giving Cap a hand.) And the Red Skull is a nasty, egomanaiacal sort who thinks Hitler is not going far enough. Not a perfect film, no, but very enjoyable. And a really sweet surprise after the credits. 'Nuff said.

This, a thousand times. Haven't met anyone yet who wasn't shocked at how little money a theater actually took in from playing movies. Concessions are the lifeblood of the megachain and the hometown two-plex (yes, they still exist) alike. Offer me nutritional information about the laundry basket's worth of popcorn? FIne, I want to be able to make informed decisions. Offer some healthier options? Sure. (no raw veggies, though, please; five minutes into the film I'd be ready to beat someone for crunching loudly away on a bag of carrots) Tell me what I can't buy? Riiiiight. Thanks, but no.
