One was that index speculators are mostly "long only" bettors, who seldom if ever take short positions — meaning they only bet on prices to rise. While this kind of behavior is good for a stock market, it's terrible for commodities, because it continually forces prices upward.

- so when a speculator who owns a contract sells because he doesn't want to take physical delivery, it doesn't put negative pressure on price. Right.

Either you're ignorant or just arguing to be funny. This decision was about private clubs... so you would only be there by invitation. You're not telling people they can't smoke next to you, you're telling people they can't smoke where you aren't even invited.

Giving government the jurisdiction over this facet of our private lives makes it easier for them to infringe on every other private action. You agree with the law here, but next time you might not be so lucky. Maybe then they will be telling gays they can't have sex, or telling parents they can't teach about jesus, because in initiative 239982, 51% of people voted that teaching about jesus is dangerous.

Unions are not responsible for better working conditions; even at their peak in 1955 they represented at most 25% of all workers. The real objective of unions is to limit the supply of labor to drive up wages for specialized workers at the expense of those on the margin and the consumers of the product. I hope they replace you with robots.
